I cannot use the La Cie update tool. Lion says iy it no longer supports Power PC. I have been in Contact with LaCie and the are working on resolving the compatibility issues with Lion. I guess I will just have to wait till they get them resolved.
I would like to thank every one for their suggestions.
Did their reply also include the discrecording tool I linked to? I still have it on my iMac because it was installed years ago - don't know if it is actually working - but the burner works and is recognized in Disk Utility - mind you, I bought this in 2004 or 2005 and except as noted previously, I've never installed any software or anything else:
No, it did not include that file. Are you using Lion OS?
I downloaded that link. It did not help. Disc utility does not recognize the writer.
Then I'd suggest that you send LaCie a screenshot of your Disk Utility with the drive not showing (make sure you have a CD or DVD in it). Other than that, I have to give up except for one last thing: did yours include Toast (they usually have)? If so, did you install it? It's an excellent burn/copy application and I've used it for years. In any case, if you have it installed, open it and after putting a DVD in the drive, see if Toast will see it.
If not, I'd go back to LaCie and tell them that I want a drive that actually works.
I've had a Lacie D2 DVD Writer for about three years, and it has been faultless. Then I upgraded to Lion and it would no longer mount media, Toast didn't see it, and when I used System Profiler to check my Firewire devices, Finder slowed to a crawl.
I took the drive out of my Lacie enclosure and that works perfectly with my USB IDE device.
I have now partitioned my machine, reloaded Snow Leopard, and my Lacie DVD is back to 'normal'. I can only presume that Lion doesn't like the Firewire chip inside my Lacie D2.
Googling firewire problems lion brings up quite a lot of similar stories, with different hardware, and very few solutions.
