File is too big to move

I have a video file which is 4GB and it's currently on my mac hard drive, but when I attempt to move it to my external hard drive which has 184GB free it won't let me and I have an error which says "The item can’t be copied because it is too large for the volume's format". I don't understand why it's too large when I have 184GB free so it should fit onto it fine.

Could someone explain how I could get rid of this message so I can move this file onto my external hard drive.

Many thanks

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.1)

Sounds like your external drive is formatted as FAT32 which has a file size limitation.

It should of course have been formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in order to work with large cideo files.

I'm choosing to leave the 245.3 GB on the external hard drive for backup purposes.

The GREAT news is that I tried to copy a 54.37 GB mov file to the newly formatted external hard drive and...

...it WORKED!

no more:

The item can’t be copied because it is too large for the volume's format

So...

My specific SOLUTION for this thread:

I was able to sucessfully move a 57 GB video file from my mac hard drive to an external hard drive once the external hard drive was formatted as:

Mac OS Entended (Journaled)

Thanks klaus1, and rccharles for your help. My problem is solved.

What format should I use to make it usable on a PC as well. My external harddisk contained files from my last laptop, but it turned out to be read only for Mac. I then formatted it to Journaled, and now I can put files on there, but what if I this Mac breaks and I only have an old pc to save my files on I need for school. What format do I need? (files are bigger then 4GB).

PS: Sorry for reviving a dead topic.
