Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

When will Apple resolve the FCPX Crashes when Effects are added to a clip in timeline.

I have tried every route to get answers from Apple regarding system crashes when applying an Effect to a clip in the timeline. I am now getting more aware from posts in all sorts of Forum / Communities that this is causing VERY MANY users a problem.

It would only take 30 seconds for Apple to post a statement to let their users know what they intend or are doing to resolve together with an estimated fix time.

Come on Apple please SAY something at least.

Ben, that is just AMAZING that you had the exact same list of Effects that can't use the Inspector. I think that proves definitively that it's a bug in the Trial. (He's in the Netherlands, I'm in Tennessee)

Yes, rendering makes no difference. I had not tried with SD media, but forgot to even mention that it also does the same with still images. The media doesn't matter, it's the Inspector/Effect combo. I'm not sure it even matters which things are on the boot drive or not.

Is it correct now to say that everyone using the Trial has the crashing, and no one with the full version does??? It seems to me that everyone who cannot reproduce the problem is using the App Store installed version.

TonyTony - thanks for the further info. My test iMac has never had FCP7 or Motion 4 on it either, so it can't be those older templates. And, the fact that there is a real installer for the paid version is curious.

Ben, Fred, - dudes, the next time they make a Trial, they need to get us to beta it :-)

Tom, just checked, and in my confusion of the multiple user accounts, boot volumes, and Macs I tried this on, the test iMac had NOT had the additional resources installed.

I went to Final Cut Pro Trial menu and chose Download Additional Content...

Is that what you mean? All Software Updates are up to date. I even trashed FCP preferences again just for the heck of it.

After all that, I did a spot check of some of these Efffects again - still the same.

So at least three of us agree it is the same list of Effects and the same symptoms causing the crashes.

Thanks David / Ben and all who have thus far contributed to this discussion.

I sent of some Crash reports to the FCPX Feedback team yesterday again but will send another note with this same information to them tomorrow.

David you have already sent your findings, Ben it may pay if you could send them yours too and hopefully with three confirmations of the same information it may get them to take a more urgent view to finding a solution.

I think all in all this has been very constructive.

@Fred,

I already issued a bug report. In reaction, the support team contacted me and I provided them with my project en footage. So they are working with that.

Yesterday after my detailed analyses I updated the team with my findings as I did here.

Perhaps David and Fred you can report to Apple via the feedback form in addition to the crashreports

@Tom

It isn't possible for me too the get the additional material. Via FCP it says I am up to date. When I down;oaded the additon via the Apple downloadpage and tried to install them got a message that I don't have an Valid or autorised application.

Apparently Apple has blocked the additional content for the Trial

Ben, Tom,

Yes, I did a feedback form already. I included my detailed results, and even linked to this discussion thread. I've had no contact from anyone though.

OK, by "additional content" is that just the additional codecs? If so, Software Update says I'm up to date. If I manually download it and try to install, the message I get is that it can't be installed because "A newer version of this software is already installed."

This is on an iMac running Lion. I even tried deleting the Trial, then installing the codecs. The message then was that no "qualifying copies of Final Cut Pro, Motion, or Compressor were found."

On my Mac Pro running Snow Leopard, the codecs DID install. I did that the very first day the Trial was made available. That Mac Pro still has the crashing though. Interestingly, if I attempt to install the codecs on my Mac Pro, I get the same error message as on the iMac about a newer version already being installed.

David, No it's not the codecs but content (FCP-Trial ->Download additional content)

"About Final Cut Pro X Content

This update adds the following content for use in Final Cut Pro X:

  • Sound Effects: Over 1300 rights-free sound effects installed into the Audio Browser of Final Cut Pro X.
  • Audio Effect Presets: Additional preset effects for the Space Designer plug-in.

This update is recommended for all users of Final Cut Pro X."

I installed the trial also on my MacbookPro 5,5 (mid 2009) according to the spec's this machine is qualified. No Motion 5 installed (yet)

Helas, same problem.

All - I have been experiencing the same problem. I tried someone's recommendation to create a new user account. Here is what I did:

I created a new user account, started up FCP X, added a 1500 x 1500 RGB jpg, opened inspector, set it to info, added FCP X vignette filter to image, clicked on video in inspector, FCP crashed. I could have tried it with more filters but why? FCP shouldn't crash with one filter added to a still let alone all the rest it has problems with.

Some things I tried to fix the problem

I verified disk and disk permissions, repaired permissions, trashed preferences,

I have Motion 5 installed. At the end of the day, I think this is a freak FCP Trial bug. As Hurley from LOST would say, "***** for us, Dude!

Sep 30, 2011 9:35 AM in response to raronson

Yes, like you, several of us tried the whole new user/trashing prefs/repair permissions thing - none of that has any affect on this. And, yes it seems clear that Motion 5 has nothing to do with it.

Although through Ben we know that Apple is looking at this, please consider doing a feedback report (not a crash report) from within FCP X - it can't hurt if they hear this from more folks.

When will Apple resolve the FCPX Crashes when Effects are added to a clip in timeline.
