MacBook Pro: light blue screen while closing programs

Hello to everybody!

I bought the MBP last July. Mac OSX 10.6.8 Leopard.

Until yesterday everything was ok.

I updated the software some days ago as requested. Every program is updated.

Here's the problem: closing the programs with cmdQ, the screen goes light blue. Forever. Yesterday twice: closing Outlook 2011 and, few minutes after rebooting, closing Google Chrome. I did the reboot and continued working, using also Outlook and Chrome. Nothing happened.

This afternoon, it happened again! This time closing Firefox. I didn't reboot, but I closed the screen as for standby, then re-opened, and the screen was ok again. Only Firefox was closed (as I pushed cmdQ before).

I have no idea of what's wrong with this Mac. Everything else seems to work perfectly. I am (was?) very happy to leave Windows for Mac...

Please help me!

I don't have strange programs and I'm so careful with it... (I have VMWare Fusion, but never used).

Please consider I'm new to Mac world, so I don't know what I can do by myself, I truly need someone to solve this!

Thanks in advance... I'd love to be still happy with my MacBook Pro!

Hello everybody I have the same issue as yours.

At the beginning it was an issue with Chrome....But when I read your psots I guess it doesn't count.

My macbook pro is a 15" early 2011 runnung on Snow Leopard. Last week I brought it to a apple store and after several tests they told me everything was ok.

What a furtive issue which is quite anoying for a 1800 euro computer (I'm a PC switcher :-))

anyway if someone (even Apple!) founds a piece of solution I'm reading to test

🙂

Bye

I've got the same blue screen problems - started (out of the blue - no pun intended!) last week. Sometimes on quitting programmes sometimes just happens like this morning 2 minutes after waking from sleep and viewing a Safari page.

I can put the MacBook Pro to sleep wile the blue screen is present then re-wake it and it is OK with all the apps running as they were before the blue screen.

I looked in console and it appears to show at 08:43:16 a hibernate image launch - though at this point I haven't put the computer to sleep. Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

I think that

-disabling 'automatic graphics switching'

&

-deleting preference files for applications (running before blue screen happens) (/[hdd name]/users/[username]/Library/preferences/com.____.plist (etc.)

helps a lot. (posted that^ a couple months ago...noticed that theres been lots of replies here) I haven't upgraded to Lion....downgraded to SL when I got this MBP; probably won't upgrade to Lion

I also observed this issue. I think it is software issue. Issue sometimes occurs after firmware actualization. Partially could help SMC and PRAM reset.

How to do SMC reset? Disconnect all periferals except power supply. Hold down SHIFT+CTRL+ALT and press Power button.

PRAM reset: CMD+ALT+P+R

Anyway I please the producer - Apple to solve this problem. It was not cheap and I bought it as maximally reliable computer. I still use Snow Leopard, version 10.6.8 because I do not want any mobile system iOS feature in computer system.

Maybe it will need a petition where users with that issue would sign it.

Possible text of this petition:

Dear developers,

we, users of Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on MacBook Pro 15" Early 2011, ask about to fix problem with light blue screen while switching from AMD to Intel HD graphics at exiting some program. We are otherwise satisfied with old good Snow Leopard and we do not think about upgrade to Lion because for example we do not want iOS features in computer system. We bought so expensive Mac as maximally reliable computer and we want have this for our money. We are not small group of clients you could lose.

Yours sincerely

Hey guys,

Don't really know if this thread is still active, but I sure hope so. I'm writing from the Netherlands, and I too have the blue screen problem. I own a mid 2011 MacBook Pro 15 inch, bought somewhere in June 2011. After reading every single post in this thread I would like to keep you guys updated on my progress. So, here is my story:

I can't recall when exactly the problems started. Inconsistently, but always after using CMD+Q I would get a frozen lightblue screen. I quickly realized that it was just the screen, since the F10 and F11 (volume) buttons gave their confirming sounds. Also could I still change brightness. At first I ignored the problem but eventually it got impossible to ignore, occuring with an average of three times a day. Then I decided to search the internet. Sadly, in the near end of 2011, I couldn't find anything(not even this thread 😕).

After a while I decided to go to the Apple retailer where I bought my computer. I would like to point out that this is not an official Apple store. They heard me out and claimed they had never heard of this problem before. Also they found me unreliable since I could not recreate the problem in front of their own eyes. I didn't know then how to force the error. They sent me home with the assignment of re-installing OSX Snow Leopard, updating all of the applications and told me not to install any third party apps. All of this I did, and as you can guess, the problem wasn't resolved. So back I went, this time they took in my computer and gave it a "stress-test", which pointed out that I wasn't in fact as unreliable as they thought and they acknowledged the problem. After about a week I could come back to pick up my laptop, and as it turned out, they replaced my display - because that was what HAD TO BE causing the problem. Not.

So, without any progress, I returned to the store. They took in my laptop again, redid the stress-test and found the same problem, surprisingly. They concluded that there was a problem with the videocard, and since all MacBook videocards are welded on to the motherboard, they replaced my entire motherboard - or as you might say: LogicBoard. Now, this all took place about three months ago. And here I am today, writing to you, with a still unsolved problem.

Since the replacement of the motherboard I have had a total of four freezes, all after CMD+Q. Considering that a motherboard replacement is quite hardcore, I think it's safe to say that this confirms your assumption of the problem not having to do with the hardware.

Tuesday I am going to go back to the store, and tell them the problem still exists. I am consciously not going to tell them about what I learned from this forum (videocard switching etc.) out of fear they will just give me the blame of the error. I am seriously expecting them to at least give me a free OSX Lion upgrade, and if not give me a new device. The new one naturally not being from the mid/late 2011 batch.

I will keep you all updated!

Thanks for reading,

Roks

EDIT: I would like to add to all of this that I have encountered something new that might possibly be related to the problem. Whenever I start up a game (Diablo III) the screen gives a quick blue flash, in exactly the same colour as when it freezes. Although this time, it's a flash and nothing permanent. Anybody any clues?
