"The selected SAN location is already in use"

After upgrading to FCPX 10.0.1 I get the message: "The selected SAN location is already in use" and FCPX can't see my Firewire-attached DroboS.

The fine-print in that message tells me that the same user that I am currently logged in on (from the same computer) is already using that drive. I therefore cannot use that drive for FCPX at all.

The Drobo is accessible through Finder, and when FCPX is starting up it does briefly appear in the list of drives that contain FCPX events. I have tried deleting the files .fcplock and .fcpuser that appear in the root folder for the Drobo, but this makes no difference.

HELP!! I need to be able to use my external storage!

I had the same problem but all I did to solve it was eject my external, restart FCPX and then plug in my external again. It came up with the message while my external was out but I just left the message there and plugged it in and it loaded my projects and the message went away.

Yes I think you're right - it was the only thing that cleared that message for me too. Therefore it's kinda bogus and a reset (close/open) seems to do the trick thankfully! Thanks for confirming the fix 🙂

I'm editing FCPX on an Imac 3.4 Ghz i7, 16 gb RAM, OS 10.7.3, using a 4TB RAID 1 Western Digital Thunderbolt drive partioned into a two 2GB mirrors. On three occasions in the past month FCPX has frozen, and then I've gotten the "Selected SAN location is already in use" error. Then the Western Digital drive utilities tell me the RAID status is degraded, and that one of the two mirrored drives cannot be accessed.

Each time I've been able to keep editing from the remaining RAID partion, and then restore from the RAID mirror, but I'd like to ask if anyone has found a way to keep this freeze up and shut down from happening.

Yikes.

Sounds like a complete pain in the butt to fix this error message.

Isnt there an easier fix?

After reading about Apple's warning that mounted DMG files could potentially be the issue I checked to see if I had any mounted. I didn't - but i did have an external USB hard drive that i wasn't using for my work at the time attached. I ejected it and it seems to have been the culprit. Now, everything seems to be working perfectly well 🙂 Can anyone else confirm this in their experience?

I just experienced this same problem.

I ejected all external drives, trashed the final cut .plist and rebooted. All projects and events returned.

This happened to me because I had run out of space on my external drive and fcpx was trying to save any changes to my event there. Once I had closed down fcpx and transfered my event to a different hard drive the problem was solved.

It is indeed because lack of space! check it out. That was my solution. Delete some folders or transfer them to another disk but the one which fcpX uses to backup the project.
