So I had trouble running Netflix in Safari on my Mac Pro with Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.5
What I have found to solve my silverlight issue is:
**Always restart/quit your browser or computer after making all these changes to refresh all the preferences.
Safari:
Firefox
For Firefox make sure your application is up to date by going to the menu and Firefox/About Firefox/ (this will automatically update firefox)
Chrome
For Chrome make sure your application is up to date.
**I never use Firefox or Chrome so I don't know of any particular preferences that could hinder Silverlight. In their default state after doing the steps under Macintosh HD they worked fine.
Macintosh HD
- Make sure to download the latest version of Silverlight from Microsoft: https://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/
- Uninstall any previous versions of Silverlight
- Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/ Delete your Play Ready & Silverlight folders!
- Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Internet Plug-Ins/ Delete Silverlight.plugin
- Macintosh HD/Users/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/ Delete Silverlight folder
- Macintosh HD/Users/Library/Application Support/Internet Plug-Ins/ There should be nothing related to Silverlight in this folder. Delete anything that is related to silverlight in this folder
- Install the latest version of silverlight that you downloaded and run the process. Allow the opening of applications from the internet. Also need Admin password to authorize installation.
- Go to Applications folder Macintosh HD/Applications/ Open "Microsoft Silverlight" Alias
- Microsoft Silverlight/Updates/ "Check for updates" should be checked
- Microsoft Silverlight/Playback/ Check both "Enable components" & "Enable hardware-acceleration"
- Microsoft Silverlight/Application Storage/ Check "enable application storage" & REMOVE all websites listed at this point in time.
- Restart your computer.
- Open your web browser and try to watch your videos.
The solution that I needed was to delete the whole Play Read folder and not just the mspr.hds file inside. I also was not allowing Internet Plug-ins under Safari's Security preferences.
**Some folders are hidden like the Library folder under Users. Strongly suggest everyone use the Houdini application to toggle-on all hidden files and folders. http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/26729/houdini
- Click Download at top of page
- Download .zip file and unzip it.
- Drag Houdini.app to Applications folder
- Open app and toggle on all your hidden files.
