Silverlight plugin does not work!

Hi,

I' ve bought a Macbook pro not so long a go, it's running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1 but the Microsoft Silverlight plugin does not seem to work, I tried everything.. Reinstalling, rebooting, installing Flip4mac. Uninstalling everything correctly and installing only the plugin.. I tried different browsers; google chrome, firefox, opera, safari nothing worked.. The plugin is ofcourse installed correctly, I even tried running the browsers in 32bit mode (which was advised at a different forum).. Flash movies are not a problem btw.. I need to use the silverlight plugin to view back TV broadcast from my country.. It does not give an error when I load the movie it just give me a black screen (and no sound) and says closed...

Does anyone know what to do about it?

Would be much appreciated

greets Bram

Amazon offers both Flash Player and Silverlight as options for video streaming. You can find these under Your Video Library: Settings: Player Preferences. Choose Flash Player.

Netflix requires Silverlight. It's also has been designed to work with Chrome, which has Sliverlight built in. To date, however, Chrome does not play well on OS X.

Hulu does not require Silverlight.

For all intents and purposes, Silverlight is not the player of choice on OS X.

The solution may be as simple as opening Safari then opening Preferences under the security icon open Plug-in Settings button, check to see if the Silverlight icon is checked, if it is NOT check the box and then try opening the application or website that uses Silverlight. This should work. Also using Firefox website works too, it will indicate whether your version of Silverlight is activated or needs to be allowed for use. I hope this helps.

make sure you are allowing Silverlight software to run on your machine.

Bless you! I managed to turn off Silverlight by accident yesterday on Amazon on Safari. Uninstalled and reinstalled and it still did not work on Amazon video. Chatted with Amazon who said Apple does not support older versions of Silverlight. When I said I'd installed the newest version, they said to uninstall and reinstall Safari, which of course cannot be done without reinstalling the entire OS--not a solution. Wish I'd found your simple solution hours ago. Thank you.

Sam riddle you are very welcome, I had to figure it our on my own and what drove me nuts about this forum is that NO actually answered your question they kept sending you the link to go to the Silverlight website which in reality did not answer anyones questions. So you are very very welcome. Glad I could help and I hope it helps others.

So I had trouble running Netflix in Safari on my Mac Pro with Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.5

What I have found to solve my silverlight issue is:

**Always restart/quit your browser or computer after making all these changes to refresh all the preferences.

Safari:

  • Safari/Preferences/Privacy/ Make sure to remove all your website data
  • Safari/Preferences/Security/ You should check "Allow Plug-ins"

Click on Manage Website Settings/Silverlight/ When visiting other websites choose "Always Allow"

Firefox

For Firefox make sure your application is up to date by going to the menu and Firefox/About Firefox/ (this will automatically update firefox)

Chrome

For Chrome make sure your application is up to date.

**I never use Firefox or Chrome so I don't know of any particular preferences that could hinder Silverlight. In their default state after doing the steps under Macintosh HD they worked fine.

Macintosh HD

  • Make sure to download the latest version of Silverlight from Microsoft: https://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/
  • Uninstall any previous versions of Silverlight
    • Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/ Delete your Play Ready & Silverlight folders!
    • Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Internet Plug-Ins/ Delete Silverlight.plugin
    • Macintosh HD/Users/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/ Delete Silverlight folder
    • Macintosh HD/Users/Library/Application Support/Internet Plug-Ins/ There should be nothing related to Silverlight in this folder. Delete anything that is related to silverlight in this folder
  • Install the latest version of silverlight that you downloaded and run the process. Allow the opening of applications from the internet. Also need Admin password to authorize installation.
  • Go to Applications folder Macintosh HD/Applications/ Open "Microsoft Silverlight" Alias
    • Microsoft Silverlight/Updates/ "Check for updates" should be checked
    • Microsoft Silverlight/Playback/ Check both "Enable components" & "Enable hardware-acceleration"
    • Microsoft Silverlight/Application Storage/ Check "enable application storage" & REMOVE all websites listed at this point in time.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Open your web browser and try to watch your videos.

The solution that I needed was to delete the whole Play Read folder and not just the mspr.hds file inside. I also was not allowing Internet Plug-ins under Safari's Security preferences.

**Some folders are hidden like the Library folder under Users. Strongly suggest everyone use the Houdini application to toggle-on all hidden files and folders. http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/26729/houdini

  • Click Download at top of page
  • Download .zip file and unzip it.
  • Drag Houdini.app to Applications folder
  • Open app and toggle on all your hidden files.
