iTunes 10.5 hangs during iPhone 4 sync

Just installed iTunes 10.5 and attempted to sync iPhone 4/4.3.5 several times. The process hangs while "Backing up" with the status bar right under the t in (Step 1 of 5). I've swiped the phone to cancel, which leaves iTunes continuing on as if the phone were still syncing. I used Task Manager to quit iTunes on Win Vista, restarted iTunes and attempted to sync again. Hangs in the same place. So, I restarted the computer, restarted iTunes and it's still hanging during Backing up... I am so frustrated! Help!!!

This even helped me. Thanks alot.

Just one question though: do I have to do this stuff every time? Cause when I need to connect it again after maybe a week, I´ll have to do this step once again.

Actually I didnt have the problem of iTunes freezing durig the sync, it rather freeze when I connect my iPhone and iTunes is starting up. (In settings I´ve made the change not to sync automatically when I connect the phone, maybe that´s why it freezes on startup)

It seems that the standard repsonse is "have you tried switching it off and on". The unfortunate thing is that when the Apple is working it appears bullet proof. However when it does not work then you basically have to fend for yourself. I have doubts that iTunes etc interface is written with any intelligence, it often asks you to do three different things at once: backup, update and transfer, that you know will conflict, but you trust them and click the OK button. Don't do it. I also recommend restarting everything before any updates as this seems to make them go smoother.

As per Frank above the netsh did not seem to work. However waiting a long time does. It seems the backup is not to the local computer but into the "cloud" and it then restores from the "cloud", this is why it takes so long i am guessing. However maybe counting eggs to soon as has not restored yet. Was considering waiting till 5.1 and they had the bugs out. Do not like being the vanguard. Also once again iTunes wanted to apply changes half way thru the process, i selected "do not apply" goodness knows what would have happened if i had selected to apply them? I think Apple and other providers rely on a stable and fast internet connection to achieve their aims, which unfortunately is not always the case. I am also concerned with Apple having a backup of my phone, but i guess i would have contracted that concern away, when i clicked the I agree checkbox. At least when it is restoring it gives you an idea of how long you have to wait, even though its been stuck on 48 minutes for the last 20 minutes.
