iTunes 10.5 hangs during iPhone 4 sync

Just installed iTunes 10.5 and attempted to sync iPhone 4/4.3.5 several times. The process hangs while "Backing up" with the status bar right under the t in (Step 1 of 5). I've swiped the phone to cancel, which leaves iTunes continuing on as if the phone were still syncing. I used Task Manager to quit iTunes on Win Vista, restarted iTunes and attempted to sync again. Hangs in the same place. So, I restarted the computer, restarted iTunes and it's still hanging during Backing up... I am so frustrated! Help!!!

My last attempt seems to have done it, knock on wood. I restarted the iPhone, set it to sync again. Now it seems to be slowly upgrading apps. I hope it makes it this time... I want to be ready for the iOS upgrade tomorrow!

having a similar issue. updated to itunes 10.5, and on start up i get an error message that reads "iTunes requires a newer version of Apple Mobile Devie Support. Please uninstall both Apple Mobile Device Support and iTunes then install iTunes again." i did that and still get the same message. any thoughts?

When I had Task Manager open, I noticed a process called Apple Mobile Device Support, which may need to be closed out before updating. Just guessing here.

My own situation of syncing never happened. I got as far as updating apps, and it hung again. This morning, I'm trying again. This time, hung on Backing up, only in the beginning of the process.

HELP!!

I have been having the same issue and have tried the following:

1) Deleted Backup from C Drive in case it was corrupted

2) Restarted several times

3) deleted Itunes the correct way meaning, Itunes, Quicktime, Mobile Support, Update manager, Bonjour and Application, etc. and reinstalled Itunes...did this 2x and still having issues

4) let it Back up for 4 hours...still nothing

In windows 7, click on your start menu, go to accessories, right click on the command prompt icon and choose "run as administrator". Once it opens, type in the following command...

netsh winsock reset

hit enter and it should say something like winsock reset successful now reboot your computer.

Hi, Does anybody know what can fix this issue in XP? I have tried all the steps to uninstall all items and reinstall 3 times now and still freezes on backup and apple mobile devise is still taking 50% of the CPU.

So frustrating. I just want to get my phone ready for upgrade tomorrow.

I've two Windows 7 64 bit desktops.

On the one I've always used which has all my backups, apps, music etc etc I'm having the same problem and I've tried everything including above suggestion, removing and reinstalling, New download, stopping processes using MSCONFIG and Autoruns all to no avail.

On the scond PC it's all working perfectly but I've no backups, apps, data, music or data.

Not happy.

The one difference between my two 64 bit PCs is that the one with no problems has not had Tuesdays Microsft updates installed whereas the problem one has.

Perhaps the .Net updates or one of the others is blocking access to the iTunes store?

I can confirm that entering netsh winsock reset in the command prompt in windows xp also worked. Now done on 2 machines & both successful. Thanks for the fix. Saved me pulling my hair out.
