iTunes 10.5 does not load shared library files

Since today's update to iTunes 10.5 from 10.4.1. iTunes can no longer access the shared music library I have on my iomega NAS disk. It sees the disk and lists it as a shared library, but when I click on the library it goes into an endless loading cycle. In the past it might take a minute or so to load the library, but since the update, iTunes never actually does load it.

There is no error message, not even an operation time-out. I can't see anything rrelevant in the console. It just goes on for ever trying to load the shared library.

It was loading the shsred library just fine until this evening when the update downloaded.

Any ideas?

Hey, no problem Drop.

Just for the record, what you are describling is configuring iTunes preferences to relocate your iTunes media files (library) to another location such as a NAS device. I in fact do this and have never had a problem doing so.

As you have remembered 😉 the topic of the thread relates to running iTunes "servers" (shared libraries) on non-Apple hardware, such as a NAS device, a Linux PC, a Windows Home Server, etc. that are not actully running iTunes.

Dark, I understand, sort of.

Since all the library files are on my LG NAS,

  • itunes library extras.itdb,
  • itunes library genius.itdb
  • itunes library.itl
  • itunes library.xml

including the iTunes Media, Album Artwork, what is the difference? These are the guys controlling the db, right?

Functionally is it not the same? Not debating, I really do not know.

I assumed the difference in this method versus the iTunes feature on my NAS was that it would basically load the same lib's and db's but do the updating of the library. On my NAS the only menu feature under iTunes is the library update.

I originally thought I had to setup the DLNA to do this, maybe will still have to once LG upgrades the firmware. I do want the features to work properly since I paid for them and whether I use it or not; unless it is something obscure.

Learnig all the time, I hope.

Dark, that is my point, everyone on my LAN can see everything play songs simultaneously. Last night my wife was using the iMac and listening to songs and I on my MacBook Pro listening to songs from the same library.

In fact, I am using iTunes 10.5.3 and the iMac has whatever the latest is. It works great.

To clarify, there are no music files inside either of the 'puters when viewed in the finder. The only way to find the songs is on the NAS with all the library files.

On the laptop the songs are listed under Shared and on the iMac they are in the normal Music place under Library on the left side of the window.
