Hey, guys.

I managed to install itunes 10.5.1 by changing permissions of each key listed during the installation proccess. Note that if do not close the error message pop up window showing the key you are not supposed to have access and also the iTunes has been correctly intalled untill this point (icon placed on the Desktop), you will be able to open and use iTunes 10.5.1 without any problems. However, as soon as you close the error message pop-up window, the iTunes is automatically removed from your computer by its own installer, once it incorrectly considers that an error has occurred.

I had to manually edit the permissions of each key pointed by the error message pop-up window of itunes installer, giving Adminstrator privileges to them through the regedit. The entire proccess took me almost 4 hours and I did not have to reboot my computer a single time whenever a new key was listed as unaccessible by my user.

You won't have to remove any Apple software previous installed on your computers or use any further tool to do what I did, but will it requires lots of patience.

In short, the situation seems to be caused by both the Apple software installer and the so famous fail proof Win installer. Congrats Apple and Microsoft! You have reached a new level of stupidity in software development. Twice the number of developers working on the same application shouldn't mean twice the crap released in the market.

Fernando

Fernando, What was the exact error message you were getting in the event viewer? Sounds like you may have solve the problem I am seeing on my system, but want to make sure. Thanks!

My Error in the Event Viewer:

I can't remember all error messages I got, but all of them were like the one shown below:

User uploaded file

None of the messages were related to "'policy.8.0.Microsoft.VC80.CRT" as you mentioned.

What I can remember is that almost every key whose permission/ownership I had to change are located under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folder at Win registry. For instance: \iTunes\open; \*mp3\open; etc.....

Try the following:

1) Run the iTunes installer and wait for the error message be prompted.

2) Open the command line prompt as Administrator, run regedit and search for the key indicated in the error message window.

3) Add the Administrators groupand/or your user as owners of those keys and change their access permissions, giving them Administrators full control.

4) Close regedit and run the iTunes installer again untill the next error message be prompted. Do the same for this new key. You don't need to close the command line prompt or reboot your computer for each edited key.

Keep doing that untill no error messages regarding not enought access permission be prompted anymore. This may take a while 🙂. I wish you luck with that.

Fernando

I'm having the same problem. It gets almost to the end and fools you by displaying, "ITunes Installer Completed." Then when you read the message, it says, "The installer encountered errors before ITunes could be configured. Error occurred during installation. The system has not been modified. Please run the installer again, or click Finish to exit. The strangest thing was to get a "rollback message" in which the progress bar actually scrolled from right to left, indicating that the installation was being "undone." Never seen that one before!

Thanks for any "fixes" you may encounter. Bob Basow, Lawrence, KS bobbasow@me.com

Hi guys. Why am I not surprised of being back here so soon? 😟

It was just a matter of days after having solved the upgrading issue to iTunes 10.5.1. Apple has released the iTunes 10.5.2 and I'm getting worse errors than before to get it installed.

I removed all Apple apps from my computer again, changed keys and folders permission/ownership as I described in my previous post, but now the iTunes installer stops at the very beginning with a message saying something like "the installer has encouttered problems and can't continue installation.... Finish and try to run it again". I don't get not even the permission error messages I was getting before.

Worse than that..... I can't even repair or reinstall iTunes into my computer. I'm without iTunes at all.

Could anyone help me with that? Has Apple already released anything about these updating/installation problems occurring on Win 7 x64? Until now, Microsoft did nothing about it. I believe we share the same feeling that all this crap is too much incompetence coming from 2 companies as Apple and Microsoft....

Hallo Fernando!

Judging from your last post, you seemed to be quite knowledgeable regarding necessary corrections in the registry. I consider myself more or less an "average" user. I thought you were close to the answer. And now this!! There are now 23 pages on this thread! Something is seriously wrong, if so many are having problems. I can only refer to my last (and only) post on page 13... "Time is much too valuable. MY SOLUTION: after removing all Apple Software as described so often in these threads, I downloaded a slightly older version of iTunes (vers 10.4.0.80) and everything works again as expected." I'm just going to be patient and wait for several more updates, with people registering success. Then I'll try it again. It's not a solution, but at least I have a working system again. And less frustration. Wishing you (and all the others reading this) all the best. - Octavian (from Bavaria, Germany).

Hi, guys.

It seems I've managed to install iTunes 10.5.2 on Win 7 x64 again.

I just had to go deeper into Win Reg and remove from it every single entry related to iTunes, iPodService, AppleSoftwareUpdate, AppleMobileDevice, etc. I run regedit as Administrator and change the owner and the permissions of the keys of Win Reg I wanted to remove whenever I got the "Permission denied" message.

Then I reboot my computer and run iTunes installer from the very beginning. iTunes seems to be working ok and my libraries seem not to be affected any how. So far so good.

Wish you all luck with that. It takes some time and patience.

Fernando

Morebarn,

Since it is obvious that you have not taken the time to read through the previous 23 pages of comments (can't say I blame you), I again think it is worthwhile to repeat that since this problem can be caused by a variety of very different factors,THERE IS NO SINGLE SOLUTION TO ALL OF THE PROBLEMS, even though the end result is a failure to update iTunes. Here are some examples of the different symptoms:

  • iTunes fails to update because their are residual files left over from previous updates
  • iTunes refuses to update because apple mobile device support fails to install
  • iTunes refuses to update because apple application support fails to install
  • iTunes appears to update successfully but does not recognize your Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod)

If you have the same failure symptoms as Fernando, it is possible that his solution may work for you. But his solution will not solve all of the problems described in the previous 23 pages.

The best thing that posters with a solution can do to help others is to clearly state what their symtoms are in addition to their solution. Others can then choose the most likely solution that matches their symptoms.

Hey geniuses, thanks to one of you, finally installed iTunes 10.5 and updated iPhone 4 to IOS 5.

Took me nearly 5 minutes for these. No need to uninstall anything or restart PC. (Wins 7 64bit)

Method:

1. Go to control panel.
2. Search "Apple".
3. Repair everything inside that list.
4. Go download iTunes 10.5 at http://www.apple.com/itunes/
5. Install it and wait for the magic to happen/

PS: It'll only remove every files of the previous iTune 10.4.1 but it's during the installing. After that, launch you iTunes 10.5 and everything are there. Need no rebooting or restart your computer after everything above. (Wins 7 64bit) Good luck 😀
