Having the same problem. I just bought and am running a Dell XPS Win7 x64. I downloaded iTunes 10.5 and attempted to install when I was confronted by this message:

"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

For the last two days I've been looking for an answer. I use an iPhone 4 and I would very much like to update my photos, music, games, documents etc. with iTunes. Which at this point seems bloody impossible.

I have tried uninstalling all Apple software from my new Dell without any success either. I have managed to uninstall everything except for "Apple Software Updater" when the same error message as before pops up. So I can't install or uninstall.

I then downloaded CCleaner and tried to remove and repair Apple Software that way. Same error message.

I managed to download and install iTunes 9.4. But still can't connect my iPhone.

So I tried to update my iTunes version to the 10.5.2 through this version. Same error message.

I'm at my wits end, my patience has thinned considerably, if anyone has any advice for me it'd be so very very appreciated!! Please, help me!

Heather, it sounds like the Apple Software Updater currently installed on your Dell has a problem and is not only stopping you from updating iTunes but also stopping you from uninstalling Apple Software Updater. Microsoft has a utility that will help you uninstall it called Microsoft Fixit Pro and you can download it here: http://bit.ly/oSzq30

When you run it it will ask you if you have an install or uninstall problem. Tell it "Uninstall". It will then present you with a list of applications on your Dell. Point it to the Apple Software Updater.

After it completes, do a fresh install of iTunes, which in addition to iTunes will also install a few other apps including Apple Software Updater.

Wishing you success and let us know how you make out.

There are at least 4 issues relating to the 10.5.x update/install issues. To see the real error message you need to look in the Event Viewer for the error code and description. In my case the error was HRESULT: 0x80070005 code, usually referes to an ACL issue (Access Denied). I worked on the issue for at least a month with Apple Support and tried all of the suggestions and fixes listed here with no luck. In the end, I had to reload a perfectly stable PC except for itunes. Hopfully, your issue is different Good Luck.

You are correct about there being several different problems that prevent iTunes from installing, as I pointed out a few pages back. Some can be solved without a reinstall of Windows and that is why it is so important for those that find a solution to include their symproms along with the steps they took to solve the problem, in their posts to this forum. That will be most helpful to others who have the same symptoms.

I am gonna say this error baffled me for months, I was using my old WinXP desktop pc just to use itunes. Here is the simplest and easy way I got it fixed.

I opened regedit with administrator permissions (start menu>type regedit>right click>admin)

and I decided to try changing the ownership of all the affected subkeys to the Administrators group to see if it would fix the key in question. All of the wonky keys appear to be in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components
.

I right-clicked on key 7ABFE44842C12B390AF18C3B9B1A1EE8, selected permissions, advanced, owner tab, and then checked the box to “Replace owner on subcontainers and objects.” Click OK. Regedit complained, “Registry Editor could not set owner on the key currently selected, or some of its subkeys.”

I ignored it and discovered I could now select subkey 83AC89C9A1C48CA45BC56149798C28B6 MIGHT BE ANOTHER KEY!!!!*************************************************MINE was the 000021599B00901001000...

without tripping the permissions error.

A right-click on this subkey showed that there were no permissions set. I added the account SYSTEM and gave it full control. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< this was the fix!

IÂŽve done it, step-by-step. Everything goes fine until I plug in my iPhone with iOS5. Then it shows a message like "you need to install a 64 bits version of iTunes in order to work with this device".....the problem is that the installed version is the 64 bits. My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits.

Any idea of how to solve it???

Thank you in advance...

Hi people. I've had this problem for weeks on my Alienware m14x Windows 7 Home 64bit. I've tried many solutions but finally got it to work today. What I did was go to Control Panel -> Remove Programmes -> I removed everything related to apple (quicktime/itunes/bonjour/apple software update, etc) I restarted my laptop and downloaded the itunes 10.5.3 setup. Right click the programme and choose run as administrator and it should work fine for you. Cheers 😀

What was the error code in Event Viewer you were getting? I performed the fix you describe as well as others which did not correct the issue. Users need to understand which specific ossue this solves.

Also, for the apple uninstall and reinstall you descibe, users need to make sure they follow the proper uninstall sequece as descibed in the Apple document describing the fix you talk about.

Hi Heather,

This sounds like the same error message I have been getting on my Dell. It has frustrated me for months and I did every bit of research and tried every suggestion to no avail. At one stage I completely reinstalled Windows 7 and installed iTunes sucessfully only to have the same issue when the next iTunes version rolled out. In the end I had to install itunes on my MSI Notebook (which also runs Windows 7 64 bit and has no problem with iTunes) just to be up to date for iOS 5 for my iPad.

I finally stumbled across this solution which was posted for Vista 64 bit way back in 2009 but which worked like a dream for me. Read it here:

www.windowsbbs.com/windows-vista/82460-vista-home-premium-x64-installing-itunes- solution.html

You might need elevated priveleges to install the file. I found I needed to elevate to Administrator but I now have the latest version of iTunes installed on this Dell PC and running smoothly. AT LAST!

Heather,

I found the link I supplied didn't work so I edited my reply previous reply with instructions but the edit seems not to have been posted.

Go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlsSet\Services\MSIServer

Look for

WOW64

If it's value is 0x00000001 (1)

Change the value to (0)

You will see in your Editor

WOW64 REG_DWORD 0x00000000 (0)

After changing the value to zero restart your Windos Installer or simply reboot.

Apparently changing the value to (0) instructs Windows Installer to work with the 64-bit installation

BTW - the man you posted this solution said it took him over a month to find it. I wish I had found it earlier - especially before I reinstalled Windows 7!

Hello Peoples...

This is my first post here, so forgive me if im a little wrong.

The prob seems to be that when you buy a laptop like my Sony Vaio, the version of Windows 7 64x, has been made esp for Sony and some of the other computer companys... so its not clean cut like an off the shelf version of windows 7.

Anyway, i too tried for 3 days trying to install Itunes 10.5 to no avail....., so after 30 mins on the fone to Sony, they couldnt help, then another 30 mins to Apple tech supp, we nutted a work around.. i`ll try list it in order below, here goes.....

1, Go to accounts and create a new user account with FULL admin rights.. !!!!!!!!

2, Log out of ur current account and log in with the new account.

3, Go to ur main drive, ( C: ) and look for users

4, Find ur previous account in users and open it, then look for downloads, and hopefully you will see the installer for Itunes 10.5.

5,Click on the prog and run it, you should NOW see it start to install correctly..... ( mine did )

6, When installed, see if Itunes will work correctly, dont plug ur iphone in yet, !!!!!!!

7, I did this, to make sure it was all good, restart ur laptop/pc and log back into the new account, rerun itunes and if it loads correctly try ur Iphone to sinc.....if all goes well close Itunes and log out and then, back in on ur old account, you should now see Itunes on ur desktop, try running it, its a little laggy at first, but with in a min or 2, should be working fine.....

8, Connect ur iphone and see if it will sinc...if alls good then go to step 9...

9, Go to account settings and DEL the new account you made, it will ask to remove all files, click yes as you have only installed Itunes... when done, restart ur lappy/pc, and you should now have a fully working itunes 10.5 on ur normal accout...

Since i have installed Itunes 10.5 it has updated itself a couple of times and runs fine....

Any extra help, your more than welcome to contact me @ capt_rego@hotmail.com

THIS WORKS! TAKES 1 MINUTE! TRY THIS ONE NOW! 😁

After 3 months,

And 4 serious attempts,

Wasting ~ 10+ Hours,

And MUCH frustration

This one worked in 1 minute!!!!!!

THANKS ELCEET!!!!!!!!!!!! YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS For non-PC people, you need to type REGEDIT in the Windows 7 'Search Program and Files' area once you 1st Click on the lower left corner START button. This starts the REGEDIT program.

Thanks, markzona. Glad it worked for someone else.

Thanks also for adding the information about accessing REGEDIT which I should have included.

That solution was originally posted by jazcan in the WindowsBBS.com forum and I'm so glad I stumbled onto it. I've been wallowing in having all my iTunes stuff working properly again on my main PC.
