In my registry (Win 7 Home, 64 bit), I followed everything as you described. I can’t find the “WOW 64” but I do see a „REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)” after an Icon with the name: ServiceSidType. Would this serve the same function? Should I change the 1’s to 0’s here? Does anyone else have this and/or tried the suggested solution? Thanks for any help in advance...

The solution I posted was specifically in relation to the error message"The Windows Installer service could not be accessed....." and I found the solution which worked for me by trawling the forums and trying lots of other suggestions first.

However,THEJZB and octavian6 are both correct in that some installations of Windows 7 64-bit do not have the registry key WOW64. I have two computers running Windows 7 64-bit operating systems. To all intents and purposes they are the same yet the one running on my laptop had no problems with installing iTunes and it does not have the registry key referred to above. My Dell PC was the problem installation and the WOW64 key was present under MSIServer. Changing the value as described worked the miracle for me and also for markzona apparently.

I do not think REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1) has anything to do with the problem and would be reluctant to mess with the registry without prior knowledge of what services would be affected.

Perhaps someone else knows more about what key governs the Windows Installer if the WOW64 key is not present.

Ok This should definatly get itunes installing for u if everything else has failed!!

I previously couldnt get iTunes ... icloud control panel or quick time to update

You have to take ownership of your temp directory that is located at

\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Temp

As soon as u take ownership of it using any of the methods mentioned earlier it will start installing... i use the right click menu shortcut way and had to use it on \Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\CoreFP also and create my own new folder at \Program Files\iTunes\ .. but the installer will give u prompts if u have the errors there

Good Luck

I had problems installing itunes for a second time, Installer has insufficient privilges.

Used this simle trick form Microsoft, just the first part right clicked and "ran as administrator"

Bingo it worked! Did not need to go through lengthy process,

I would suggest you to right click the iTunes setup file and select the option to run as administrator and check.

If the issue persists you may take the ownership of the folder and then use the steps to grant permission to everyone.

Before taking ownership I would suggest you to create a new restore point so that the system may be reverted back in case of any loss of data or irregular behavior.

Follow the steps in the below link to create a restore point - The System Restore tool uses restore points to return system files and settings to an earlier point in time. You can use it to restore the operating system to a point in time in which you did not experience the problem. To restore back you need to have a restore point available so I would suggest you to create a new restore point before taking ownership of the folder –
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Create-a-restore-point

You may take the ownership of the folder and then use the steps to grant permission to everyone –

  1. Locate the file or folder on which you want to take ownership in windows explorer
  2. Right click on file or folder and select “Properties” from Context Menu
  3. Click on Security tab
  4. Click on “Advance”
  5. Now click on Owner tab in Advance Security Settings for User windows
  6. Click on Edit Button and select user from given Change Owner to list if user or group is not in given list then, click on other users or groups. Enter name of user/group and click ok.
  7. Now select User/group and click apply and ok. (Check “Replace owner on sub containers and objects” if you have files and folder within selected folder)
  8. Click ok when Windows Security Prompt is displayed
  9. Now Owner name must have changed.
  10. Now click Ok to exist from Properties windows
  11. Once you have taken the ownership of file or folder

Grant Permissions to everyone-

  1. Go to C: and then click right click on folder and choose properties.
  2. Then go to security tab and click Edit then click Add => Advanced.
  3. If you click on advanced now click on Find Now and choose everyone and click Ok.
  4. Then again click Ok and now click on Allow => Full control => Ok.

DISCLAIMER: Affecting system settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly or may result in loss of data. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuration of ownership settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

FINALLY, got 10.5.3 installed. I had to take control of ALL Apple folders on my system, then removed iTunes, Apple Support, and Apple Update via control panel, the tried to install it. Got same error as before, then it rolled back and properly installed. IDK why. Once again, I won't buy an iPhone or iPad if this continues to be a problem. Hopefully, this may help others.

As one of the participants in this discussion thread who tried every fix but could never get iTunes 10.5 to install correctly (I used the "workaround" instead), I am pleased to report that the latest version of iTunes (10.6.0.40) that was released today installs perfectly. As I watched the install it was obvious that the update process is different than in the past. For the first time, it asked permission to restart the computer at the end of the of the installation.

Not for me though. 10.6 gave me all the same issues as before. So I removed the three above apple installed programs and tried to reinstall. It failed again, tried to roll back, and installed properly. I verified the version by opening iTunes. So there is still a problem with it. I think some Apple and Microsoft people need to sit down together and hash this out.

Add me to the list!!

I can't install itunes or even just Quicktime on a new HP Windows7 64 notebook. I get the message "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this installer to complete could not be run." Then it just packs itself back away.

I've uninstalled and removed all traces and re-tried as Apple suggests but I always end up the same.
