I have a user that enters numbers frequently into an app. They switch the keyboard to number and type. The when pressing space bar, the numbers switch back to letters. Is there a way to keep the numbers open on the keyboard after typing space bar so they do not have to switch back?

There is no way with the existing system and keyboard. But this is an excellent case for a bluethooth keyboard. Doing heavy number input is just not real good on the keyboard built for predominantly letter entry.
For those users, consider adding a BT to the mix.

If you split the keypad (Long press the keyboard key for the option) then the spacebar on the right hand keypad does not cause an automatic switch back to the alpha keypad
