Error 8288 when upgrading my first gen Ipod Touch to IOS 3.1.

The problem isn't apples customer service. The problem is apple's customers. Their all idiots.

I followed the downgrade link - but the problem that I am having is that I do not have the prior version library file - because I have never had a prior version on this computer.

Nice one Josh, you are just the sort of customer Apple love, uncritical and not too bothered if the software doesn't work at all. Cheers and thanks for the helpful input.

Thank you, thank you! This fixed the problem. It's a bit of a hack, but it works. It doesn't really take that much time to downgrade, install the iOS update, then go back to 10.5.

Step 6 of the downgrade instructions says to copy and rename the most-recent file in the "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder. I tried this, opened iTunes, and still got the "newer library" error. My second-newest file also had the .itl extension, and copying that one and renaming it allowed iTunes 10.3 to open properly.

BTW, this was on a 2.0 GHz iMac Core Duo, running OS 10.6.8.

The download works on itunes 10.3. Luckily I had the older version stilll on one computer. It won't work on 10.5

I have the exact same issue...got the 8288 error when trying to update...I decided to click to reset my Ipod since I don't have too much on there I care about losing...BAD IDEA....since I've upgraded computers since getting this Ipod several years ago, it says the pairing isn't correct or something, now my Ipod is wiped and I can't get the computer to recognize it...

error 8288. I had the same frustrating experience. It works fine on itunes 10.0 will not work on 10.5

Ok I know I'm going to sound like an idiot but I went the help document and I have NO idea how to do the following steps. Can anyone help?

4) Go to ~/Music/iTunes

iTunes 10.5 upgrades the iTunes library file and won’t let you downgrade, so you will need the prior version library file. Here’s how to go about that

5) You will need to rename iTunes Library.itl to iTunes Library.bak

6) Go into the “Previous iTunes Libraries” folder where you will find several files with dates in their names. The most recent one will have the .itl extension, but the others don’t. Copy that to the parent folder ~/Music/iTunes/ and rename it iTunes Library.itl

Press Start , then Music, then open the iTunes folder. There i a subfolder called previous iTunes library. The latest files in that folder will be .itl files. I'm no expert and dont know how to rename a file, so i just tossed all the .itl files in the bin. Be aware there can also be .itl files in the main folder that you will have to rename or throw away. Try and start up iTunes, it will work if you got rid of all the .itl files, it did for me!!! :-) finally. I CANT BELIEVE THEY ARE NOT ADDRESSING THIS PROBLEM!!!!!!

i love apple, i really do but the least they could do was say that the update only worked with itune 10.3 so that people didnt waste money downloading it and then finding out that they were stuck. i was really looking foward to the ioS 3.1 for my itouch and now im pretty much going to have to ask for a refund because itunes 10.5 is the oldest one i have on my computer. i just wish that they would have mentioned it on the downloading page or attempted to fix the problem. maybe from now on they need to charge people after their downloads have neeb sucessfully completed.

I have finally managed to download 10.3 itunes but it know says that "the file itunes library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes......arrrgg this is driving me made now, you find one solution to one thing and then you get another problem!!! any ideas what this means or how to fix it???

how do you rename the ituneslibrary file on a PC?

i am having the same problem and it is really ******* me off cause ive been waiting to gt this update for like 5 months when i finaly got the money for it i get an error when i try to download it *** is this apple fix this problem it should have been fixed by now the 1st gen itouch shouldnt have a major problem like this after its been out for so long

I too have been having this probelem and have tried to follow the instructions here. I ended up uninstalling itunes and now cannot find the librabry files with itunes 10.3 - have I messed up? really want to sort out my iPod Touch for my son so he can use Apps - I am not very techy
