iOS5 install failure

I've attempted to install iOS5 several times now, each time it goes through the installation process fine. During the 'Restoring iPad firmware' process, it looks to be almost complete before it stops with the "The iPad could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1)."

Rebooted my iMac (OSX Lion, i7), verified software updates are current. What else should I try? iPad is unable to boot now (the plug-in to iTunes graphic).

I have downloaded the update and it is crashing when it tries to install as described above. do I need to download the update and wait an hour each time? or can I just try installing it again somehow?

I think that the update itself should be OK. The problem appears to involve the iPad trying to communicate with the servers. You should not have to download the update again, just click on "Update" in iTunes when you connect it next time. Good luck.

For those of you getting the "3200" error (and you've followed the instructions), you may want to close all open tasks and hard boot. (power + home until you get the apple) After doing so, it will at least tell you that it's the servers that are the issues, and will instruct you to try later. Then, just keep updating until it gets through. It will at least get rid of the bogus error reports. What stinks is you have to wait for a backup every single time.

Like many I kept trying to updated to IOS5 last night and found myself in a restore loop, and lastly a bunch of errors saying an error occured (1) which prevented the restore from completing.

I found iTunes had moved iOS 4.3.5 to the trash (.ipsw file), grabbed that and moved it to a safer location.

Rebooted my ipad into dfu mode (held down both power and home for 10 seconds - then released power and held down home for another 15 seconds... in which the screen went black but itunes still recognised that it needed a restore).

Lastly when clicking the restore button - I held down the option key which brough up a file selector and I was able to pick my saved iOS 4.3.5 and restore with that finally. Just syncing my apps again now. Will wait until this fiasco is sorted out before attempting the upgrade again.

Hopefully this helps someone not waist the hours I wasted trying to get anything working on my ipad last night.

Regards,

D

Make sure you're using a mobo direct USB2, hard reset and just keep trying to restore. It will eventually work.

The problem seems to be timing with all the contacting Apple bull. Lags make the restore/upgrade stall in various spots. This can happen on boots, reboots, progress bars, verifications, etc.. JUST KEEP TRYING. I KNOW. I WENT THROUGH ALL THIS.

I was bricked for over an hour. I connected to a mobo direct USB3 and it went through the very first time. You might try turning the firewall off as well. See the thread I started called "The Solution". 😉
