iOS5 install failure

I've attempted to install iOS5 several times now, each time it goes through the installation process fine. During the 'Restoring iPad firmware' process, it looks to be almost complete before it stops with the "The iPad could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1)."

Rebooted my iMac (OSX Lion, i7), verified software updates are current. What else should I try? iPad is unable to boot now (the plug-in to iTunes graphic).

Upgrading my iPad 2 has failed four times now with error 1064 - some glitch with USB, apparently. Worse, it makes all my laptop's USB ports blind after failing (no USB devices are recognized after upgrade failure, including the iPad). I have to reboot into safe mode and connect a USB device to wake the USB ports up again. All in all, not a satisfying customer experience.

iPad 2, Windows 7. 3 months old iPad. told ios5 upgrade available yesterday, tried and failed. Charged overnight. This morning got the 'dead battery' graphic (see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275?locale=en_GB) and charged again.

Connect to iTues graphic. I did.

Restore sequence started.

[Indicator?] the iTunes progress bar is way ahead of the iPad progress bar.

iTunes bar gets to end...

Shows error message

"The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (14).

Repeated twice now.

Is it just overload on the Apple servers?

I've never been so frustrated with apple as with the iOS5 update! It backed up my data before the install, but recorded only the backed up data 1.5 months ago!!!! Are you kidding??? So now I lost all the apps and data of one months worth.

APPLE - if you require a software upgrade to make your apps work, you might as well make it a reasonable upgrade experience. I'm not buying Macs any more... too buggy!

TOTALLY UNHAPPY. Tried doing my very first install of updates on my very first IPad and like you all say...... I am stuck....... Cant turn it on or off, cant reboot, cant do anything just stuck with a little apple in the centre of screen, occasionally something flashes up so quick, no time to read it then straight back to the little apple....... I have tried for support, but it is the weekend and nobody is open, I have scheduled a call back from support, but they cant do one until Nov 4!!!!!! Anyone out there have any suggestions? I so wish I had left it, and not even attempted it. Oh an I purchased extended support thinking that would give me access to 24/7 support. Grrrr... They got my $ but I have not got the support......... HELP.....and please in simple terms.. I am no techno brained whizz kid.... Just a Nanna lol....

This has worked for me and others who had the same problem after updating to iOS 5, but there's no guarantee. It's worth a try, though!

Be sure to have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer before you start.

Launch iTunes, then:

1. Hold down the home button and the sleep/wake (power) button on the iPad at the same time for 10 seconds. Ignore the red power-off slider if it appears.

2. Release the sleep/wake (power) button, but continue to hold the home button down for 15 seconds longer.

3. The iPad will go black.

4. With iTunes open, connect the iPad to your computer with the USB cable.

5. The Apple logo should appear on your iPad.

6. iTunes may take a few seconds to recognize the iPad, but it should do so eventually.

7. You may see the beachball (or hourglass if you use Windows) before iTunes recognizes the iPad, but don't give up and don't force quit unless it goes on for more than a few minutes.

8. Once iTunes recognizes the iPad, it should offer you the option to restore it. If the contents of your iPad appear to be OK as they are, you may not need to restore.

Good luck!
