iOS5 install failure

I've attempted to install iOS5 several times now, each time it goes through the installation process fine. During the 'Restoring iPad firmware' process, it looks to be almost complete before it stops with the "The iPad could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1)."

Rebooted my iMac (OSX Lion, i7), verified software updates are current. What else should I try? iPad is unable to boot now (the plug-in to iTunes graphic).

Now it started working. The small difference is that I kept holding the home button for very very long time. During this long time the iPad was going through the self restart cycles and was totally invisible to iTunes!! But randomly at one of those restart cycles and while I was still holding the home button, iTunes detected it. Now restore is in progress...

Very useful ideas Mr. SureFire... I appreciate your help gazillion times 🙂

Update: I have a functioning iPad once again.

I had to force the iPad into DFU mode (hold home button down while powering up) and then use my work WINDOWS machine. Loaded up iTunes, downloaded the update, install went fine. Went back to my mac, plugged in the iPad, iTunes figured out it had to do a restore, restored all my data and I'm in good shape again.

Hey,
I downloaded iTunes 10.5 and then tried to update iPhone 4 (gsm) to IOS 5.
the update had failed for no clear reason and from that point on I’m trying to restore it.
for the past 20 attempts (several on my laptop and the rest on a PC), I get the same error massage:
“The iPhone “iPhone” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (-1).”

I have not jailbroken the iPhone, i only have dozen or so apps, synced it every other day.

b.t.w
i tried the DFU mode before connecting it to the pc.
also, i tried downgrading back and restoring with the following ipsw packages: IOS 4.3.2, 4.3.4, 4.3.5 and 5.
different error code appears with each ipsw.

what shell I do now? plz help me.

Beware Missing Icons

After many tries, I got my iPad 2 to upgrade. Didn't do anything special, it just worked this time.

One gotcha for people to look for: Two of my applications didn't appear on the iPad screen, although they did appear on the mock-screens in iTunes (app/ sync). So, I went to search (swipe right) and searched and was able to open them by entering their name (i.e. New York, brought up the NYT Times app even though its icon had disappeared)

So, you might think the install has worked, then discover an app's icon is MIA. Try search.

When I went back to iTunes, and re-arranged the icons one re-appeared, not the second, so far.
