iOS5 install failure

I've attempted to install iOS5 several times now, each time it goes through the installation process fine. During the 'Restoring iPad firmware' process, it looks to be almost complete before it stops with the "The iPad could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1)."

Rebooted my iMac (OSX Lion, i7), verified software updates are current. What else should I try? iPad is unable to boot now (the plug-in to iTunes graphic).

So after about the 10th attempt of trying this, there was pseudo success (the upgrade failed with the same unknown error 1), but when the iPad rebooted itself, it starts up to the apple logo, there is a flash of the progress bar under it, then it goes to the swirling dots for about 5 minutes then reboots. This process repeats indefintely. I was able to get the iPad to turn off by holding the home button and power button.

Scheduled an appointment at the Genius bar for tomorrow, iTunes won't even see the iPad now due to the boot loop.

Same thing here...

I tried deleting all the apps from the iPad (1st Gen) no joy...

I really beleive this is a server issue as it fail immediatly when verifying with apple...

Make sure you can ping gs.apple.com as it seem that its where iTunes connect to verify.

EDIT: Just re-ran the software update and 2 new updates appeared: Safari and a security update! I just did it to update iTunes, so I taught I was OK!

I will update when the patches are applied...

Glad I found this thread, though even Apple's discussions are taking forever to load today. I was able to upgrade my iPhone 4 to iOS 5 with no problem, but my iPad2 is currently stuck in backup. I've rebooted the iPad and my MacBook, and it still hangs at the same place on the progress bar. Based on what I've read here, I'm going to assume it's server-related, though I don't know why the iPad has to communicate with the server during backup.

This reminds me of the problems Apple had a few years ago when they launched MobileMe, and it's sort of discouraging. I'm definitely going to wait to migrate my MobileMe data to iCloud until after they get the bugs worked out.
