iOS 5 - iPad could not be restored

I've tried several times to update my iPad 2 to iOS 5.

It took forever to download the software. I updated iTunes to the latest version, rebooted the computer and went about updating my iPad.

After iTunes reported it was backing up my iPad, it attempted to restore the software but failed with the message "The iPad "Ezlivin's iPad" could not be restored. An internal error occurred."

***? What "internal error"?

I've tried this several times with the same failure message.

Next time why not give me a Blue Screen of Death with incomprehensible textual gibberish? It'll make as much sense....

After multi attempts to update to IOS5 and restore, I kept getting the 1611 error. The only thing that has (finally!) worked, following others' suggestions, was to unplug my USB connected iPad from the monitor, plug it directly into the computer, and stop all anti-virus software. Took up most of my day to get here, but I'm finally onboard..

This is so frustrating. I stayed up till 2am (Europe) getting the same error over and over.

I tried everything. Resetting, rebooting, you name it.

I even restored from one of my earliest back-ups which took forever.

To be honest, I am glad I realized I am not the only one because I was almost sure there was something wrong with my iPad 2.

BTW during all this trial and... error, I seem to have lost over 20Gb on my Hard Drive. Have you noticed anything similar?

I have an iPad2 and had unknown error 1611 - I tried and failed several times with it plugged into my monitors USB port - but once I plugged it directly into my PC it worked first time.

Thanks to members posting here for pointing me in the right direction, no thanks to apple for stupid cryptic messages - and not testing all would be ok before putting my devce into recover mode!

Yesterday my iPhone4 updated fine. Today my iPad1 can't update.

First I got error 1611 and it gave me a drier installation error, then said I had to restore. I didn't want to erase it all because I wasn't sure whether it backed up properly, so I used another application to kick it out of restore mode.

Now I get error 3194 every time.

Tried switching the usb cable away from the monitor usb hub, directly to my PC, but didn't work. Closed all running applications, too.
