Finally managed to get iOs 5 onto my 3gs. Gone through the setup process but it has come up with "Could not activate iPhone"

Anybody else had this and if so have you solved it?

Reflashing the baseband worked for me after multiple attempts. Just make sure you have the latest version of RedSnow and also make sure that you tick the 'Deactivate' checkmark where you tick the Install iPad baseband option. You will be all set. I did this with the stock firmware and the only problem I have now is that my mail and safari app doesn't work at all. If anyone has the solution for this let us know. Cheers to all!

If you just use RS as before but choose only Boot Tethered, and try again following the standard DFU boot thing, all should be well with the world!

Somehow it ain't JB.as it reboots just fine, but for some reason this is a quirk of the fix. Until a more permanent solution is found.

My Safari and Mail work fine now. However, I've got a problem with iMessage.

It seems like it doesn't work after reflashing the baseband.

Any idea?

Before reflashing baseband, I used the Call back & Home Button medthod to get through the activation. Everything worked fine, but my phone could not recognize the sim card. Therefore, I have to use wifi,

and iMessage worked great at this time.

After reflasing baseband, I tried to text, but iMessage doesn't work as before. It can only

text as SMS even I text to the guy who is using iOS 5.

Alright, I got Safari and Mail working again, using the "boot tethered" in RS, as described above. I don't have any contacts using iMessage yet, so haven't tested it.

To summarize:

  • Solved "Could not activate..." by J_B'ing using newest RS, NOT installing Cyd14, but reverting baseband to iPad, deactivating and restoring from iOS 5 ipsw.
  • Now phone was working again, but Mail and Safari did not work.
  • Used RS again, this time choosing "Just boot tethered" option.
  • After this, Mail and Safari is working again. Reports from others indicate the iMessage will now not work, but haven't confirmed this on my own phone yet.
