i had the same problem with win7 ue and avg 2011. it could sync for one time after rebooting but then nothing helped. thanks to spritchard i've now opened the ports in avg and can use wifi sync without problems. what doesn't work is when i close itunes and then connect my iphone to a power outlet it doesn't automatically open itunes and begin syncing - but i don't know if it's supposed to although i've checked "open itunes when iphone is connected". anyway here are the steps for opening the relevant ports in avg:

1. Open the AVG Program.

2. On the Tools menu, click "Firewall settings."

3. In the left tree menu under Profiles, expand the profile you are currently using.

4. Click "System services."

5. Click "Manage user system rules," and then click Add.

6. In the new window, for "protocol," select "TCP"

7. For "direction," select "Both ways," and then click OK.

8. For "local port(s)," click "User selected ports; check a port in the list or add your own to the edit box", type the "123,3689" and then click OK.

9. For "remote port(s)," select "All ports (0 - 65535)," and then click OK.

10. For "remote address(es)," select your safe network and then click OK.

11. Confirm all windows by clicking OK.

repeat steps 5-to-11 for "UDP" and ports "123,5353"

Tried every solution I could find; some work once, than noting until reboot win7 x64 or Ipad2 or resest networks settings on Ipad. I now have it so far that itunes, most of the time, sees my ipad2. But when I start wifi sync it starts to look for my Ipad and than kills the connection and Ipad2 disappears from Itunes..

Tried everything; noting seems to give a stabel solution.

Apple... you guys can help here?? One of best new features..."it just doesn't work" ?

Thanks wkish!

Win 7 x64 with AVG and router Netgear DG834G, tried disabling firewall, opening ports TCP 3689 and UDP 5353 but nothing. Stopped /started the apple mobile device service and now my iphone has appeared in itunes and I can sync!!

Enabled AVG firewall (like Leencharlotte) and I can still sync!

I finally got it to work for me on Windws 7 64 bit. Here's what I did:

Starting condition:

iPad Plugged into charger

iPhone plugged into PC on USB hub -- would sync fine when connected to PC, but iTunes would no longer see the iPhone when I disconnect the iPhone.

I then switched the iPhone to a different USB port -- one on the front of the computer.

Unchecked the "Sync with this iPhone over Wifi" button, pressed apply and resynced via USB

Checked the "Sync with this iPhone over Wifi" button, pressed apply and resynced via USB

Unplugged the iPhone from computer

I can now see both the iPad and iPhone in iTunes, and both have sucessfully synced over Wifi. I have closed and res-started iTunes and it took a few seconds, but it eventually saw both devices after the restart.

I have not tried re-booting the PC yet.

Hi All,

I thought I would share my experience on how I actually got this to work in the long run, as I had experienced similar behaviour to all those described here. My setup is Win7(x64), iTunes 10.5, 3Gs with iOS 5.

The computer would not see the iPhone when the cable was unplugged from the USB cable, likewise the iPhone would not see the computer and the 'Sync Now' button was greyed out.

1. In iTunes, with the iPhone connected via USB, on the iPhone Summary page enable "Sync this iPhone over Wi-Fi".

2. Perform a Full Sync.

3. Disconnect the USB Cable.

4. Enable Wi-Fi on the Laptop ... Yes, this was a necessary step. It did not seem to like it if the laptop was connected via Ethernet Cable to the wireless router. Only when Wi-Fi was enabled on the Laptop device itself did it activate the function on the iPhone and the iPhone would appear in iTunes.

Technically it works, but seems a little limited.

I had this issue of not syncing over wi-fi & i have fixed this. Below were my devices,

1. Windows XP Laptop

2.ipad 2 with ios5.

Below are the steps to ensure wi-fi sync works.

1. Connect your iPhone/iPad with USB cable to Computer where itunes installed.

2. Click on the "device" icon in itunes, & in "Summary" Page, ensure you have enabled the option "Sync Over Wifi My Ipad / iphone"

3. Disconnect the Cable,

You should be still able to see your ipad in itunes, if not, follow the below steps

4. Enable Upnp in your computer.

5. This link, will tell you, how to enable upnp in windows machine. --> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941206

6. Restart your Computer

7. Ensure SSDP service is running in Automatic mode.

8. You should also ensure upnp is supported in your ADSL or Wi-Fi router.

9. IN your router, under LAN settings (Advanced), there will be option of Upnp, enable this. Even if it is enabled, disable & enable it. Restart the router once.

9a. The Upnp & SSDP would take 10 minutes to discover the device. Have Patience at times 🙂.

Open iTunes & Power on your ipad, you should be able to see the ipad in itunes now. if not,

10. Close your itunes & power off ipad.

11. Restart the service called "Apple Mobile Device",

Open iTunes & Power on your ipad, you should be able to see the ipad in itunes now, if not.

12. Disable Firewall & IPS in your Network Connections. Disable built-in Firewall & IPS in Virus Softwares. Ensure TCP ports 123 and 3689, as well as UDP ports 123 and 5353 are allowed. Refer to this link for more inputs --> http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4062.

13. Close your itunes & power off ipad.

14. Restart the service called "Apple Mobile Device",

Open iTunes & Power on your ipad.

This should be working now for sure shot. 🙂. I bet.

Win7, iPhone 3GS iOS5, Netgear router, AVG.

I solved by going into services and disabling and then rehabilitating "apple mobile devise" but, when I reboot the computer (win7), I had to repeat the above operation.

Then I set the service "Apple Mobile devise" not "automatic" but with "Automatic delayed" start.

Now when I turn off the machine and power back up everything works fine!

I hope for a definitive resolution by Apple in a future update.

OK. I have a Mac Pro 3.1 running Lion 10.7.2. I have a iPad 1 and iPhone 4 which both sync with Mac Pro. After update to iOS5, the iPad syncs wirelessly without any problem, but the iPhone 4 won't. Each time I select "Sync over Wifi" option then apply, but when I unplug the iPhone, it disappears from the list. I've tried to sync from the phone whilst plugged in to power - nothing happens, just times out or says "will sync when Mac Pro available". Have tried rebooting Time Capsule router, restoring iPhone from backup and even setting up as new phone after factory restore. Same thing happens. The iPad, however, continues to sync over wifi flawlessly.

Any ideas?!

BTW, not sure if this will help anyone.

but i have noticed that if your computer has 2 connections to the network, wifi sync will not work, since they have an issue getting connected (trying to connect useing both connections at once)

i noticed this issue on a computer running windows 7 pro x64. (connected useing wifi and ethernet)

this might also affect macs but not sure.

hope this helps someone.
