I have also been struggling with Wifi sync working at random times and not at other times.

I am running a BT HomeHub 2.0. My solution seems to be around the wireless b/g/n options. By changing the HomeHub to only operate on the b/g (thereby excluding n (the 5ghz network) all the ipods, iphones and ipads appear in itunes over wifi.

I suspect some of the devices are connecting via the g network and the iMac via the n network. As a result they are unable to communicate with each other. Forcing them all to the g network fixed this.

Not sure if this is a problem with Apple devices or how the BT HomeHub functions.

Thought I would chime in and say I've got the same problem.
It seems that I have tried everything and have never got it to work.
Here is my equipment: iPhone 4 with IOS5, latest version of iTunes, Ethernet connected PC with Windows 7 64bit, and NetGear DG834G router.

I have disabled my firewall and AV software, rebooted the phone, router/modem, pc... restarted itunes, restarted mobile device service, CHECKED THE WIFI SYNC OPTION (AND HIT APPLY), forget wifi network, uninstall and reinstall itunes.... disabled and re-enabled uPnP on my router... I'm wearing out my ipod dock connector...
Tried all sorts of different combinations and it just WILL NOT WORK!

I am an IT person... it drives me NUTS to let something get the best of me... especially something this simple!
And if I see another "Just check the WIFI sync option" suggestion, I'm going to flip out. I have tried disabling that option, doing a sync, and re-enabling it and syncing again (multiple times).... NOTHING!,

When I get home, I have 2 other things to try that have been suggested... Try the remote app and see what happens, and rename my PC without a dash (I think it is set as Adam-PC)

I cant believe I have wasted HOURS worrying about this... The last thing I want to do when I get home is sit in front of a PC for HOURS on end trying to troubleshoot problems after I have spent all day at work doing the same.

Hi

I did manage to get it working, after reinstalling iTunes and running a registry cleaner. But after I restarted my comp which is a pc running xp. It was no more. I've trawled the web trying to find a solution but everything I've read and tried ain't worked. I've restarted comp and my iPhone 4 loads of time. I'm starting to get frustrated with. Could do with a fix.

Thanks

Chris

I have finally established to root of the problem I have been experiencing with WiFi Sync. I can fix the problem and subsequently reproduce it. Unfortunately, for me the fix is not sustainable. I've logged a bug report with Apple which may yield something in forthcoming updates; who knows. My hunch is that the cause of the problem I'm having (i.e. with a 1st Gen AppleTV) is unlikely to be the same for everyone else here, but it may lead to the conclusion that multiple Apple products on the same network interfacing with iTunes on the same PC is causing some sort of conflict that can only be resolved by a uninstall / reg clean / fresh reinstall of iTunes.

Hopefully this adds something to the debate...

Anyway, here's the bug report, with reproducable steps:

10-Nov-2011 08:35 PM Alexander Berry:

Summary:

With 1st Gen AppleTV connected (via Ethernet/Powerline HomePlug AV) to network, iTunes fails to see and sync with iPhone4 via WiFi.

Steps to Reproduce:

1) Disconnect all hardware from network, and reboot rooter.

2) Switch on and connect PC (windows7 x64) to network (via Ethernet/Powerline HomePlug AV). iPhone connected to network via WiFi.

3) Fresh install iTunes 10.5 (incl latest beta).

4) Connect iPhone via USB and sync.

5) Select Sync by WiFi option.

6) Disconnect iPhone from USB. iPhone remains connected via WiFi. Sync as required via WiFi.

7) Close/reopen iTunes, Shutdown/reboot PC - relaunch iTunes... iPhone still connects via WiFi to iTunes on each and every occassion.

8) Shutdown PC, reconnect 1stGen AppleTV. Restart PC / Relaunch iTunes

9) AppleTV now visible in iTunes.

Expected Results:

10) iPhone still connects via WiFi with iTunes.

Actual Results:

10) iPhone apparently nolonger seen by iTunes. Apple TV is there and syncable, but not iPhone unless connected via USB.

Regression:

Notes:

To get wifi sync working again, requires AppleTV to be disconnected from network and an uninstall / reinstall of iTunes.

I should add that another (obvious) issue I found (aside from the various Firewall tips that people have posted), is to make sure all the necessary Windows services are running.

If, like me, you tweak services to streamline your system, or run software that may do that for you, it's worth checking exactly what, if anything, has been disabled.

I found this website very useful in ensuring all default services are enabled appropriately: http://www.blackviper.com/

I am tired of all of this conjecture and BS. Random solutions and anecdote are no longer acceptable. Apple needs to fix this across the board. It has been long enough. I am sure the update today will do nothing to remedy the problem but I am very disappouinted with Apple and this 4S phone. It was released too early without proper resolution of these potential Wi-Fi synch issues. I did not buy these phone because I want to diddle with my firewall and router settings all day. FIX IT. Do you know haow many network variables there are for all of the consumer's different set up's?! This needs to be addressed centrally, not on a case by case basis. This coupled with the fact that Siri has been marginal at best, gives me a fair amount of reason to regret wasting money on this phone. This is a FAIL, I'm sorry.:(

Ok. A few hours later, many more things tried including opening ports and disabling N access on my router. I found this link in another Apple thread

http://cnx.com/?p=1612

I was preparing to follow this post, had downloaded cc cleaner, precleaned my reg, downloaded Itunes again and was getting ready un-install itunes/cleanreg/and fresh reinstall but reading down through the threads on that page, I saw some success with repair itunes which is avail by selecting the change button in Add/remove programs rather than the uninstall button. I thought, nothing to lose, so decided to give it a try before proceeding with the more drastic action, it whirred away for a few minutes, said it as all done as it fired up itunes again, my iPad and iPhone appeared and did an initial sync. From there I can now sych either from itunes - (no longer does it say looking for iDevice) or from the iDevice, (no longer is the sync now greyed out or my computer unavailable).

Don't know if this will work for all, but give it a go

======================================

Edit - ok that worked well for about 10 minutes

I did a couple of syncs on both and now both have dissapeared from Itunes 😟

I found the solution.

I ran wireshark and monitored packets. after running ping and looking at firewall log I realized that the problem arises from Bonjour ( inbuilt) . In fact connection as adhoc is Bonjour's job which is not well compatible with Windows. on the other hand Windows DHCP config can't see the iPhone.

You need to configure IP address manually.

For solution follow these steps:

1-Open Network and sharing > find your Wifi connection > Properties

2- Roll down to Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

3- click on properties

4- tick " Use the Following IP address"

5- let's assume your router IP is 192.168.1.1 ( in most cases is the same). Change these settings:

IP address: 192.168.1.2

Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

preferred DNS server: 192.168.1.1

6- check iPhone IP address: in your iPhone : setting>wifi> your wifi name > in DHCP check IP address ( in most cases it is 192.168.1.3 . if so everything is OK. ( it must be between 192.168.1.3 to 192.168.1.254)

7- connect iPhone to USB port and make a sync.

8- restart both iPhone and PC

9- after restart, make sure that iTunes is open and iPhone IS NOT ASLEEP ( apple has designed iPhone not to communicate as adhoc for battery saving , so push Home button and slide to turn it on)

10 wait for 1-2 minutes, your device will appear in iTunes
