iOS 5 Upgrade Bricked My iPhone 4 (Stuck in Recovery Mode)

I, like many others, kept getting "An internal error occurred" when trying to upgrade my iPhone 4 to iOS 5. Foolishly, I continued to hit the Update button and try again. It eventually led to my iPhone being in recovery mode. I am now unable to restore the phone due to the ongoing issues with Apple's servers and unable to use the phone because the failed upgrade process placed the phone in recovery mode.

Why would this be any different than a Microsoft Update? IT IMPROVES ONE THING AND SCREWS UP 12 OTHERS.

Seriously I did not have any issue with the update per se. After it finished all my purchased apps and music and photos were gone off my iphone.

Simply went to the Update section on APP STORE and then saw the apps needed to be gotten from iCloud. Very easy process. Then went to iTunes and retrieved all my music and photos and all works great.

Yes the 47 minutes seemed long, but I am reading here that many others had hours to get the update. Strange

My iPad went in 30 Minutes and it worked correct after the IOS5 update.

Could be your provider, your computer or the computer OS. ( It took longer under Windows XP than it did on my Windows 7 machine 47 Minutes versus 30 Minutes)

I had friends tell me it took a long time for their update, but had no problems since they did not opt for the "In the Cloud" feature.

That could have been the issue also.

I installed IOS 5.0 on Wednesday along with one million (plus or minus) other users. I think that I received every possible error message including the "updating firmware). After following the suggestions from several error messages, I finally just kept trying the install process many, many times until the install finally came to a very successful completion. What should have taken less than one hour was completed in five and one-half hours. My iPhone is now fully functional along with the new features. From my experience working in telecommunications and teleprocessing, I would venture a guess that the problem was caused by an overloaded server and/or and overloaded internet backbone. I am sure that the internet backbone was never designed to handle such a large spike of demand on its bandwith.

I have two more iPhones to upgrade to IOS 5.0. I expect that these should be upgraded in a more normal timeframe since the peak demand is over.

iPhone 3GS bricked to the point where it won't respond to power or home buttons. iTunes and other software doesnt see it, so it is comprehensively bricked. Apple shop in town tech suggested recycling, no other option/solution. perfectly good 3GS hosed and bricked courtesy of Apple.

What happens if you try and force it into recovery mode by holding the power and home buttons down simultaneously for several seconds?

NEWSFLASH, YOU'RE PHONE IS NOT BRICKED!!

There's no need to go to Apple stores, genius bar or the moon!

Everyone here has obviously not read the previous messages!

I'll explain again.

If you get an error message, phone get stucks in restore loop, powers on and off then simply hold the power button and home button together until the screen goes dark.

Quickly plug in the USB whilst holding the home button ONLY!

This will get it into a real restore mode and you will see the iTunes logo and USB picture on screen!

Then try the update again - you may have to do this several times but IT WILL HAPPEN!

SIMPLES!
