iOS 5 Upgrade Bricked My iPhone 4 (Stuck in Recovery Mode)

I, like many others, kept getting "An internal error occurred" when trying to upgrade my iPhone 4 to iOS 5. Foolishly, I continued to hit the Update button and try again. It eventually led to my iPhone being in recovery mode. I am now unable to restore the phone due to the ongoing issues with Apple's servers and unable to use the phone because the failed upgrade process placed the phone in recovery mode.

The reason for getting all of this errors is because of the apple servers getting overwhelmed by request for updates.. remmeber is not just the US updating is the rest of the world as well.. the only way to fix this errors to eihter continue to update until you get through of wait a couple of days to update..

errors codes mean that the servers cant cope with all the request for software download. it is not the software that is bad or buggy, . so be paitient...

Not sure if I finally just got lucky, but after 6 attempts it worked.

I had all other USB items unplugged, I restarted the computer, but THIS time I actually restarted the iPhone first. Not sure if that was the trick, or it was just dumb luck that the servers responded this time, but it worked.

Just a suggestion if you havent restarted the actual iPhone yet in any of your attempts.

An update: When I tried again, this time the phone "Restored". Bizarrely, it restored to iOS5, not to the backup I did earlier of my 4.3.5 setup. This was a bit of a surprise, I expected to be able to restore to my old settings, then try iOS5 again later.

Oh well, I guess I'll see how it works now, once my apps have been restored.

Hope everyone else gets unbricked soon.

Dear all,

further to my last post. My iPhone is sorted now and on iOS 5.

Ensure iphone is unplugged from computer. Hold down home button and off button until it goes dark, then plug back in holding the holding the home button and usb screen should appear. That means your Mac/PC will at least recognise your phone.

Then restore your iPhone from back-up and then keep your fingers crossed that the Apple's servers have room for you...

Good luck

How does Apple fail SO BAD at this? Everything else about Apple is AWESOME but iTunes and updating *****! Can't they start the download in the middle of the night eastern time, so some people will get ahead start and the rest can be staggered throughout the day? There just has to be another method!! Now, that we have cloud syncing how is it going to work any better? I love Apple products and I think they are the best company in the world but this is a big FLAW!! Get it together!

Vented...But, I don't feel better! :-(

I had the same issue and this is how I fixed it. I restored to my old iOS 4.3.5 and will do this iOS 5 upgrade in a few days. iTunes must have deleted your iPhone 4.3.5 restore file to trash if you are using a mac. The file name is "iPhone3,1_4.3.5_8L1_Restore.ipsw". Now you need to move this file from trash to any folder on your mac. Go to iTunes and hold on the ATL key when you click on the restore button in iTunes. This will give you an option to pick up a file. Select iOS 4.3.5 file and open it. Now the phone will be restored to old 4.3.5 version. Once it is restored, it will show up in iTunes like a new phone and will ask you whether you want to set it up as a new phone or restore from an earlier backup. Select restore from the earlier backup and it will restore to original setting like you had before you tried to upgrade to iOS 5. You will also need to sync your apps, music and photos once it is restored from the backup. Worked absolutely fine for me and I am going to upgrade later once this iOS 5 mess clears up. It took me around 90 minutes to do this whole thing. Good luck and let me know if it worked for you.
