iOS 5 Upgrade Bricked My iPhone 4 (Stuck in Recovery Mode)

I, like many others, kept getting "An internal error occurred" when trying to upgrade my iPhone 4 to iOS 5. Foolishly, I continued to hit the Update button and try again. It eventually led to my iPhone being in recovery mode. I am now unable to restore the phone due to the ongoing issues with Apple's servers and unable to use the phone because the failed upgrade process placed the phone in recovery mode.

I just tried your method and i'm now out of recovery mode and now have the USB screen, trying to restore my iPhone, but alas it still is coming up with error messages!!! Grrrr

So i am still trying this with the iPhone 4. And holding the Home button, then plugging in the usb lead, iTunes finds the device, loads and then i get this error message, " the iPhone "Iphone" could not be restored an internal error has occurred. ***!

Tried about 10 times. I thought the Option thing would be a miraculous fix, but it just gets me much faster to the point where it tells me that my iPhone cannot be restored. It's stuck in some kind of endless loop. If I hold down the home button and the power button I can get it to be recognized by iTunes, but then after that when I do the restore, it says that the iPhone "iPhone" cannot be restored. Everything is gone. So ******.

Someone else put this on all ready. At least it gets your MAC/PC to recognise your iPhone. After that I guess its waiting for the servers to cope?

Ensure iphone is unplugged from computer. Hold down home button and off button until it goes dark, then plug back in holding the holding the home button and usb screen should appear.

So I tried the new iPhone iOS5 update and failed. The Apple store broke my phone trying. They gave me a new one free 🙂 Sitting across from me at the Apple store is John Popper lead singer of Blue Traveller. Love Apple Customer Care. The new data center is not very impressive. The Genius bar tech said that the problem was the authentication servers could not be reached and that huge numbers of people were having this problem.
