iOS 5 Wireless iTunes sync..Not really wireless or what?

So.. I got to my iPhone.. Settings > General > click on "iTunes Wi-Fi Sync" .. and the button "Sync Now" is greyed-out... Something like this:

Automatically sync with iTunes on your computer when your iPhone is plugged in to power and connected to Wi-Fi.

Sync Now

Sync will resume when "USER-PC" is available.

Help me please? My intention was to finish syncing (especially my songs) back on my iPhone WITHOUT connecting it either to a computer or a charger!

The problem is the repeater. However, if the repeater is Apple products, such as Airport, AirportExpress, it will work as previously, I use AE to extend my network.

I am having the same issue when recently I use a different repeater (TP-Link) to boost my Time Capsule and while browsing the internet or connecting to iTune Home Shre etc has no issue, iTune just refuse to acknowledge my iPhones/iPads are on the same network.......

I was having same problem today, it had been a couple months since last did a sync so I wasn't sure if something had changed on our desktop or what.... but once I changed which USB port was being used it worked, no need to reboot or anything like that. I tried a few combinations of USB ports and the problem did not occur again once I returned to the *same* configuration that didn't work initially, so definitely something was awry, and changing ports fixed it. Here are the configs I tried, in order:

  1. iPod -> port on external USB hub -> auxiliary USB port on PC: did NOT work (initially)
  2. iPod -> port on external USB hub -> on-board USB port on PC: worked
  3. iPod -> any USB port (on-board or add-in hub) on PC: worked
  4. iPod -> port on external USB hub -> USB port on add-in hub in PC: worked that time!

Note that I did restart the iPod and no change, so conclusion is that #1 SHOULD have worked first time but for some fluky reason did not, and I can't clearly blame either the iPod or the desktop.

Ultimate conclusion: while on the Sync page of your iPod, try connecting it to each USB port connected to your desktop & hub, waiting 30 seconds for each attempt; the SYNC button might activate, indicating the problem is solved!

I have the same problem with the greying out and have tried all of the suggestions in the threads even rebooting my router. One unique problem with mine is that not only is it greyed out but it has my friends wireless network listed saying it last synced on Dec 27 of 2011. Her wi fi isnt even in my list any more and even though I reset my network connection I can't get this to change to my home network. I just updated both my iTunes account and my iPhone 4s with the latest updates so don't know why this won't correct itself.

I have been frustrated for months along with many others. WIFI Sync was hit or miss at best; usually didn't work. I just set my IP address on my iPhone to "STATIC" per instructions at:

http://iphone.namitkarlekar.com/2009/05/fixing-your-iphones-ip-on-wifi-network.h tml

Have plugged-in/unplugged iPhone and restarted iTunes several times. So far WIFI Sync seems to work exactly as advertised no matter what order I start iTunes and plug iPhone into power source. If this remains true then I will be forever grateful to Namit Karlekar for such an incredibly easy fix! One so easy, that it is incredible to believe Apple has neither fixed the issue internally, nor shared any such solution with its numerous loyal and annoyed patrons, who have been griping about it for months and months. Shameful, really if I were forced to choose a single word to describe their inaction!

Hope this may be a permanent fix for myself and others. Keeping my mental fingers crossed for all of us. Good Luck!

I'm using Windows 7 x64 and clicking "Repair" for all Apple and iTunes programs, per bobbles2 comment followed up with rebooting the iPad and restarting iTunes worked for me. I tried several other suggestions from this thread first and had no luck. I did not need to restart my computer, though.

I also:

  • set my IP to static for the iPad
  • restarted my Wi-Fi routers (am using different networks and one of the routers is a bridge)
  • Have VirtualBox installed (and it was already set to no network access)
  • Have the 2 "Function Discovery" services set to automatic (but they were already started)
  • Verified that the SyncServer.exe was set to allowed in my firewall

I finnaly got Wifi sync working. Even though Windows Firewall was disabled it still was breaking the iTunes wifi sync.

Control Panel>System and Security>Windows Firewall>Advanced Settings>Inbound Rules.

Bonjour Services and SyncServers are Green(Enabled) and also that they have both Private and Domain checked(double click, then go to advanced). Restart the computer and start iTunes, plug in the phone to power and it will sync.

Problem gone. WTH Microsoft. Disabled means disabled!!!

I was wondering if by setting the static ip it lets you wifi sync when computer falls asleep. For me, I have my iMac energy settings set to wake on network access, the hard disk and screen are set to go to sleep after 10 min. 15 min after iMac goes to sleep wifi sync will not happen. Was hoping to hear whether it works for you. Thanks

For those saying that it's the repeater, it may well be. But for me, my repeater (Netgear) is what saved me. My wireless sync and iCloud stopped working when I switched ISPs and starting using AT&T's router. I switched my iPhone's wifi over to my repeater and it fixed the problem.

Bottom line: it's the router and probably the MTU on the phone not being copacetic. If you can't jailbreak and change the MTU on the phone, then try to change your router.

I want you to know I joined this community just to thank you for this post. My wireless sync worked perfectly on my iPod Touch & then stopped recently. I'm pretty sure there was a windows update between it working and not working. Anyway, I would have never known how to resolve the issue. I did what you indicated and it works!

THANK YOU!!!!!
