iOS 5 Wireless iTunes sync..Not really wireless or what?

So.. I got to my iPhone.. Settings > General > click on "iTunes Wi-Fi Sync" .. and the button "Sync Now" is greyed-out... Something like this:

Automatically sync with iTunes on your computer when your iPhone is plugged in to power and connected to Wi-Fi.

Sync Now

Sync will resume when "USER-PC" is available.

Help me please? My intention was to finish syncing (especially my songs) back on my iPhone WITHOUT connecting it either to a computer or a charger!

It has been reported that Windows Firewall may have prevented the Wi-Fi sync. You need to make sure that “SyncServer.exe”, which coordinates the synchronization processes, is allowed. To do this: Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall; Look for “SyncServer” in the list, if it is not there, select “Change Settings” then “Allow another program” > Click “Browse…” > Find “C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\SyncServer.exe”. Restart iTunes and your iPod / iPhone / iPad should appear in iTunes.

After spending time dredging through Google search after Google search, I found the following that seems to work for Windows XP (so far):

  1. Go to "Add/Remove Programs"
  2. Find "Apple Mobile Device Support" and click on it.
  3. Click on the "Click here for support information" link
  4. Select "Repair"
  5. Load iTunes
  6. You should your device(s) listed

As always, your mileage may vary.

PS - I haven't read every post in this thread so if this has already been posted, I apologize.

Wow, I thought I had tried everything. But apparantly you have solved my issues. I had even tried the complete removal and cleaned out the registries and reinstalled itunes. I even fixed windows firewall issues and enabled bonjour and other programs to no avail. But just doing a repair for Apple Movile Device Support did not work. I then did it for all apple and itunes related programs and then. Wallah. Awesome. I hope this helps out everyone as this has been a major thorn in my side. Good Luck.

I had the exact same problem... (Win7x64, iPhone4, iTunes 10.5). I tried most of your suggestions, but then I noticed in my "Networking & Sharing Center" I was connected to multiple networks. 1 wireless, 1 unknown (which was because of VirtualBox). In Virtual Box I removed the networking ability and iTunes began to sync immediately.

Thank you cape_town, You just made my day, your answer was spot on, Itunes now sync`s over wireless for me.

Thanks again and well done🙂

Hey Apple, you do know there is an API to modify the Firewall when installing software right??

I've stopped using over the air syncing. Why? Because I don't really trust the process anymore. If they can't get it right to compare songs between itunes and idevice then copy the missing ones, how can I trust that they'll be able to handle something more complicated like backing up? By the way, are any of us sure that our idevices have been backed up recently using over the air? How can we tell?

For those having reliability issues, to which iTunes will show your iPhone sporadically, I believe I have found the fix. To further expand on that, your iPhone does show up, but then it will disappear. You end up having to restart your laptop and/or router to fix the issue, only to have your iPhone disappear from iTunes again.

I have basically tried everything. Trust me when I say everything. Nothing worked until I stumbled upon two services mentioned in a post somewhere. A user was having issues syncing on his desktop and after cross-referencing services between his desktop and his laptop, he found that these two services were disabled on his desktop while on his laptop they were set to manual. It hit me at that point; these two services seem pretty important to what I'm trying to accomplish, let me try to set them on automatic. Voila.

This should fix it----->

Click on the start/windows button

Type in: services.msc

Set the following services to AUTOMATIC startup:

Function Discovery Provider Host

Function Discovery Resource Publication

Ok, finally, finally! It works and works beautifully.

For those wondering, iTunes wireless sync does work.

It works on 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz bands.

It works on a LAN connected PC, which I am using. You do not have to enable your wireless adapter on a desktop.

I have a PC windows 7 running latest iTunes, iPhone 4s, iPad 1 and three iPhone 4's. All with latest iOS.

Linksys E4200v2 and a Comcast modem.

This will not help many people, but my issue was I had an Amped Wireless Wireless Repeater connected to my Linksys - to give extra range to the network.

iTunes wireless sync WILL NOT work with a network repeater or extender.

Once I unplugged the Repeater, switched every device to the primary WiFi network, the sync worked beautifully.

Now, as soon as I open iTunes - if any device is on the WiFi network, iTunes sees it, adds it to the left pane, and begins the sync. Slower than USB, but still, quite nice.

Before all this, nothing worked. Changed firewall settings, turned firewall off and on, add Bonjour, restarted services, etc.

So it does work.
