iOS 5 Wireless iTunes sync..Not really wireless or what?

So.. I got to my iPhone.. Settings > General > click on "iTunes Wi-Fi Sync" .. and the button "Sync Now" is greyed-out... Something like this:

Automatically sync with iTunes on your computer when your iPhone is plugged in to power and connected to Wi-Fi.

Sync Now

Sync will resume when "USER-PC" is available.

Help me please? My intention was to finish syncing (especially my songs) back on my iPhone WITHOUT connecting it either to a computer or a charger!

iPhone 4, Other OS, iOS 5

but was the phone fully syncronized with cable before you unplugged it?

it need to be synced with cable and with the settings mentioned before you can unplug it and use wifi-sync.

Yes. To break it down...

1) I connected the iPhone to my computer with my cable.

2) The phone icon appeared in iTunes.

3) I checked the "Allow Sync over Wi-Fi" option.

4) I performed a cable sync.

5) The sync completed successfully.

6) I unplugged the iPhone from the computer cable.

7) The iPhone icon disappeared from iTunes, when my understanding is it should have stayed.

8) I plugged the iPhone into my wall charger in my bedroom (where I still get Wi-Fi signal, and can connect to iTunes on my computer via iTunes Remote).

9) I went to Settings > General > iTunes Wi-Fi Sync.

10) The Sync Now button remained greyed out, with the message "Sync will resume when [my computer's name] is available" underneath the button.

That pretty much covers it. Again, my stats:

Windows 7

iTunes 10.5

iPhone 3GS

iOS 5 (still very obviously)

Hopefully this makes things crystal-clear.

I am pretty much in the same postion as you but I have the iPhone 4 instead of the 3GS. I had done everything on your list but still can't get it to work. Wonder if this is more of a problem with people using Windows 7, I don't know why it would but who knows.

I had EXACTLY the abovementioned symptoms with my ipad2 3g on win7 64Bit (germany, if that matters). I tried all the tips and tricks above and nothing worked for me until I completely switched off my IPad (Standby-button for a few seconds, then slider). Switched it on again, connected to power-adapter,started itunes, waited a few seconds ---> GO!

I should add, that I was waiting for this feature like crazy, because I had always extreme trouble syncing via USB (had to do it 5 to 10 times, because the backup hung again and again).

Wow, this is frustrating. I'm having the same problem.

iPhone 4, Macbook 10.5.8, latest iTunes and iOS.

When I connect my iPhone to to iTunes with USB, there is no option for "Sync this iPhone over WIFI" in the summary tab. It just ain't there.

I've rebooted Mac and iPhone and router. Turned wifi off and on a bunch of times. Home sharing is on and the iPhone can see the Macbook playlists.

I've tried everything in this thread multiple times. What else could I possibly be missing?

Also someone above mentioned this ony works with OS 10.6.8, but I can't find any other mention of that anywhere. I've read the manual, googled it, followed the above linked troubleshooting tips. Nothing.

Thanks.

Actually, you're having a slightly different problem. Most people in this thread, myself included, can get the "Enable wi-fi sync with itunes" option to appear; it just doesn't seem to work. You don't seem to have the option at all.

Out of curiosity, exactly what version of iTunes are you running? Of course, it should be 10.5, but it can't hurt to double-check.

I already replied to the fellow who mentioned OS 10.6.8; as I said, Windows support (and support for other Mac OSes, I'd imagine) have been in the betas.
