iOS 5 Wireless iTunes sync..Not really wireless or what?

So.. I got to my iPhone.. Settings > General > click on "iTunes Wi-Fi Sync" .. and the button "Sync Now" is greyed-out... Something like this:

Automatically sync with iTunes on your computer when your iPhone is plugged in to power and connected to Wi-Fi.

Sync Now

Sync will resume when "USER-PC" is available.

Help me please? My intention was to finish syncing (especially my songs) back on my iPhone WITHOUT connecting it either to a computer or a charger!

iPhone 4, Other OS, iOS 5

Still having problems. I tried hooking up phone to pc then unchecked the sync with wi-fi button on iTunes then did a sync, then I checked the sync with wi-fi button in iTunes and did another sync. Once I did that I unplugged my phone and the phone still showed on iTunes and it said at the top something like looking for iPhone just above the bar and the sync now button on the phone was lit up and then after few seconds the dissappeared from iTunes and the sync now button on phone was grayed out again. Guess I will just keep doing the old way by plugging into the pc.

UPDATE:

OK not sure what happened but it seems to be working now.

2nd update:

I was able to sycn once over wi-fi but decided to try putting my pc to sleep and wake it up to see if it still worked which of course it did. My phone dissappered from iTunes and won't come back.

I've just managed to get mine working.

Same situation as most of you guys. Windows 7, IOS5 (of course) and followed all the correct steps.

However I've found that if my desktop is on wired network only (same router as the wireless, same IP network etc) then I cannot wirelessly sync. However, if I enable the wifi card in my desktop I *CAN* sync!

I'll see if I can investigate further into what my router might be doing to block traffic between wireless and wired, but like most free routers with broadband there isn't much clever stuff going on there, just a LAN network (wired and wireless) and a WAN network and a route between them.

I hope that helps you all.

The key items seem to be...

Cable Sync first

Check "Allow Sync over Wi-Fi"

Cable Sync again

If you got it right then the phone stays visible in iTunes after it is unplugged and the phine will sync automatically when plugged in to charge or manually at any time.

I just got home from work and tried this.

1. Tried just triggering a sync from the iPhone. Sync button still disabled. So it seems to have "magically" started working for others, but no such luck for me.

2. Connected my iPhone to my computer via USB cable.

3. Performed a cable sync. Sync successfully completed.

4. UN-checked "Sync with this phone over Wi-Fi". Clicked "Apply", then "Sync".

5. Cable sync successfully completed.

6. Checked "Sync with this phone over Wi-Fi". Clicked "Apply", then "Sync".

7. Cable sync successfully completed.

8. Unplugged phone. Phone icon disappeared from iTunes again; it should remain if wi-fi sync works.

9. Took phone to bedroom. Plugged in wall charger.

10. Tried to sync over wi-fi, but sync button was still greyed out.

11. Confirmed that I could still connect to my computer using iTunes Remote over wi-fi.

Looks like it's still not working.

Intriguing. I don't have a wifi card in my desktop, though, so I can't try this.
