iOS 5 Wireless iTunes sync..Not really wireless or what?

So.. I got to my iPhone.. Settings > General > click on "iTunes Wi-Fi Sync" .. and the button "Sync Now" is greyed-out... Something like this:

Automatically sync with iTunes on your computer when your iPhone is plugged in to power and connected to Wi-Fi.

Sync Now

Sync will resume when "USER-PC" is available.

Help me please? My intention was to finish syncing (especially my songs) back on my iPhone WITHOUT connecting it either to a computer or a charger!

Hello everyone.

I have been having this same problem. Not only with iTunes Wifi Sync feature included in iOS 5, but also with the Apple-created "Remote" app from the App Store used to control iTunes via Home Sharing and ALSO with the Bonjour-enabled "AirPrint for Windows" service which I have installed.

For each of these apps, my iPad simply behaves as if it can't SEE the service on my PC (windows 7 x64). Naturally, each app has been configured 100% per the documentation included, but still my iPad just can't see the services out there. I feel that when I solve one of these issues, then the others will also be solved.

I factory reset the iPad and the router, and I reformatted my PC. Clean slate! This did not help, however. The network tools app on my iPad can ping my PCs IP address all day long, so I know it's not a simple connectivity issue. It must be a protocol or port issue.

The best guess that I have at this point, and the procedure that I will try when I get home, is one that I saw on another discussion thread here at Apple.com. Basically:

1. Access home router's config page via browser

2. Notice the UPnP setting. It is probably turned on. I know mine is at home.

3. Disable UPnP. Reboot router. Then go re-enable it.

This procedure has been said to work on the other thread. I hope to have good results tonight, and I hope that readers of this thread also have good results with this fix. Good luck out there!

I'm using the stock Verizion Fios router. I disabled UPnP. Sync button is still greyed out, and iTunes doesn't see my phone unless I connect with the cable.

FWIW, we are not encountering the same problem. You cannot access your computer via wi-fi at all. I can; iTunes Remote works fine for me, as does mSecure (a third-party password app that can sync over wifi with a Windows client). It's just this iTunes wi-fi sync that isn't working for me.

I've done all previous steps and it only worked after I rebooted the router.

Success! When I arrived home, I...

Downloaded and updated my router's firmware (should have done this first)

Disabled UPnP on the router, applied change, then unplugged router to power it off.

Waited a few, plugged it back in, logged back in and enabled UPnP. Rebooted it again.

Remote works now!! But wifi sync still did not.

Plugged iPad into PC, and, oops... On iPad's "Summary" page, the "Sync with this iPad over Wi-Fi" box wasn't checked. Checked it, and everything is working fine now.

So far, WiFi sync seems pretty great. Good luck to all, and have fun with iOS 5

I spent all day yesterday trying to get my iPhone to sync over wi-fi without luck but today it is working just fine. The funy thing is that it will work when is NOT connected to power and if I connect it to the power the icon in iTunes disappear. Isn't is supposed to work the other way around?

I'm having similar problems. Windows 7 64-bit. It seems after I do a wired sync, I can sync wirelessly for a little bit but at some point that sync button goes grey and the only way I can get it back is by doing another wired sync.

On my IP4, under Cloud, it definitely says one of the requirements is to be powered. I left the IP powered in my charging stand overnight and this morning, there was some syncing down overnight. Whether it HAS to be powered, I don't. But it makes perfect sense to me in that unpowered wireless syncing could run the battery down to zero.

It all seems pointless anyway. I thought this would work when connected to any WiFi network. But you essentially have to be in your house and plugged into a charger. You may as well just manually sync it!!

Doesn't seem pointless to me. The phone in Preferences/iCloud says the phone needs to be powered. I DOESN'T say you have to be connected to your home network. I would assume ANY wifi connection would work.

Makes perfect sense to me to have the phone powered when syncing. Otherwise, too much drain on the battery while on a walk-about. Do you really need 24/7 syncing?

Hi,

I was having the same issue with wifi syncing and after following every piece of advice in this thread (and others) I finally found a solution that worked for me here http://cnx.com/?p=1612.

The issue was due to iTunes leaving a multitude of redundant files and registry keys behind during the upgrade process from 9 (the first version I installed on my PC years ago) to 10.5

Once I used CCleaner to uninstall all Apple software and clean out the registry, and then re-installed iTunes 10.5 wifi syncing started to work within seconds.

Note, unless you're very unlucky, the process of uninstalling iTunes should not delete your music or iTunes library. However if you do try this, take a backup just in case.

Hi,

I decided to invest in a new cd from itunes to see if adding to my library would cause the phone to sync, after download my phone still didn't appear in itunes. I figured oh well wanted the music anyways. Here is the kicker, even though my phone never showed up as "syncing", when I looked in my phone library there it was. So, sync worked but was not indicated on pc. Second experiment. I made some changes to a "playlist" guess what? The changes showed up on my phone even though there was no "sync" indication in itunes.

iOS 5 Wireless iTunes sync..Not really wireless or what?
