iOS5 update causes over capacity problem?

I've just applied iOS5 to my iPhone 4 and after applying the update and trying to do a sync, iTunes fails because it says the iPhone is now 14gb over capacity.

My iPhone had 4gb free prior to the update.

The category it lists as over capacity is "Other", but I have no idea what it that "Other" stuff is.

Any advice?

From what I have been reading so far and based on my own personal

experience... Clicking on/off a tab or an item(s) or a playlist, ANYTHING

that will cause iTunes/iPhone to recalculate the disk usage will most

probably fix the issue. I think majority of the people who had issues,

re-syncing fixes the over capacity issue.

Another issue I had, minor one, majority of my personal ringtones did NOT

get copied over. I hand to uncheck all the ringtones, sync, check all the

ringtones, re-sync and it all got copied over.

Best of luck to all.

I'm confused. I had the huge "other" issue (from a spare 5 GB's to 7 GB's overflow), but it seem to have been fixed for now following the suggestions here about resyncihng ( thanks!) - however I've tried every tip in the book to get some missing images back, that has been following this issue.

I.e. I have a few albums (around 3 GB worth from iPhoto) that I won't sync at all. The photo's (around 800) the iPhone have taken is all there, but not the albums I've made in iPhoto.

I see them albums in iTunes as they come from iPhoto and they are checked in iTunes to sync. But they won't sync to my iPhone 4 (32 GB) though, either I toggle the sync box on or off, resync with or without music etc.

GAAH!

Definately a calculation bug. I've had the same with my 64GB 3G iPod Touch. Has 3GB free after update to ios5. After sync had some overage and deleted some photos. Doing some check-unchecking and finally got all my photos synced back. I found that iTunes indicates I have 1.16GB free, but while connected to iTunes my Touch says I have 3GB free.

Hopefully Apple will correct this bug along with the cover artwork bug.

Peace,

Chris

I've just been experiencing this in iTunes 10 with my iPhone 4 16GB

It says i have 8GB of Video, when i have about 3.4GB

It seems to have coincided with iOS5 loosing most of my ringtones, which i solved with deselecting them, syncing, reselecting them and syncing again

the only fix i've found for the over capacity issue is to deselect sync music/films/video (pick one) then reselect it and sync this causes it to recalculate the capacity

its an annoying bug to say the least

Mine didn't work checking or unchecking options in the iTunes. It didn't even sync the iPhone. The only way to make it work again, with others coming from 6,8 Gb to 2,3Gb was:

1) Go to settings >general >reset >erase all contents.

2) Restore from a backup before the update to iOS5 when I was asked to configure the iPhone in the iTunes.

I still don't know if 2,3 Gb of Others make sense.

I had pretty much an identical pissue. I unchecked "sync all music" and it automatically synced reducing the 'other' from 10GB to 0.48.

It wouldn't resync as it said over capacity

Reselecting the sync music made it slightly over capacity - it seems that it was trying to add all 3000 songs on my mac and not the ones i had checked. Can't see that option anymore - instead, I selected to sync all genres - which does seem to take into account what I have selected in iTunes.

Syncing now, showing there's going to be 3.5GB free.

I hope that speeds the phone up again as it appeared to slow down after upgrading to iOS5

I didn't try restoring from backup as I didn't need to

Good luck

Quick and easy solution for those who were brought here by google:

If you haven't turned off your device in a while, turn it off and turn it back on. Everything should be back to normal.

I must say this thread was equally useful to me as it was a waste of time. Half the posts begin with "oh ya, I have that problem too" and usually don't end with any useful input or just repeat what's been suggested. Either way, thanks to those who actually made suggestions I managed to figure out a solution that worked. Hope it works for you guys too.
