How to upload a document to iCloud from Mac?

Hi. I have successfully shifted my MobileMe data to iCloud. Hurrah. I am intrigued by having the documents "up there" and synced to all my devices. My question is this: is it possible to upload a document from my Mac, so I can later work on it on my iPad? If so, how do I do it? Thanks for any hints that you may provide.

Whatever documentation I have seen seems to show how to upload a document using iOS, but what about from my iMac?

iPhone 3GS, iOS 4.3.3

Yes, this is not seemless, but it is fairly straightforward. I've seen a number of other posts suggest essentially the same thing, but they go about it somewhat sloppily.

There are 3 easy steps for either action:

To upload a file from mac:

  1. open iCloud site in browser
  2. select iWork, then select the appropriate tab at the top (Keynote, Pages, Numbers)
  3. drag the file you'd like uploaded onto the page. Done.

It's simple, but in reality there should be an update for Keynote, Pages, and Numbers to simply have a button where you share the file directly to iCloud. Any changes you then make on an iOS device or other Mac would then push those changes to the iCloud, and subsequently to your Mac the next time you open that file.

To download file to mac:

  1. open iCloud site in browser
  2. select iWork, then select the appropriate tab at the top (Keynote, Pages, Numbers)
  3. select the document you wish to download, then click the 'Download' button that appears.

Your mac should automatically open that document in its respective application as soon as it's finished downloading.

So, 3 easy steps, but it should be better.

Hi,

Your suggestion of:-

To upload a file from mac:

  1. open iCloud site in browser
  2. select iWork, then select the appropriate tab at the top (Keynote, Pages, Numbers)
  3. drag the file you'd like uploaded onto the page. Done.

Is simple enough and as per Apple official help.

The problem for me though, is when I select iWork in the iCloud in Safari for exmaple, when select Pages, only thing I got is LEARN MORE and GET PAGES FOR IOS.

So I did and paid for it and is runing on my iPhone 4 (IOS v 5.0.1) & iPad.

iCloud seting are all set in iPhone also.

But when drag the file (MS doc) to Pages in iCloud, nothing happen nor I can see what, if any documents in up there ?

There is no iWork APP in App store for ios ? only Pages, numbers and Keynotes indivudually.

Why should any one paid for something but it's not working ?

This must be one of the worst possible f@£* up Apple have, but when they made so much, who am I to get any help ??

Anyone can put me to the right direction here is most approciated.

Thanks.

Hi thanks for your advice.

I use a latest Macbook air - Mac OS X 10.7.2 with MS Word for Mac - MS Office 2011.

There is no provision to save a .DOC or .DOCX file into Pages format ?

I then open my Pages App on the iPhone 4 - IOS 5.0.1, create a dummy document from template, and the only place I can uplaod for sharing is either by email or iWork.com which after resistered usung the same iCloud Apple ID, trun out to be just sending an email ?!

The Pages App also offer to copy / save to iTunes, iDisk or WebDAV.

According to the info on my iPhone, there is 4.5GB out from 5GB available to use !

There is also the PDF file that I wish to upload to iCloud which is supported document type.

Do I upload to Pages with PDF files ? When I done so, it simply display the content in the browser ! Though I already signed in the iCloud with same ID as per IOS device - iPhone / iPad.

Can you advice again please.

Thanks.

Hi again,

It's working OK now for .doc / .doxc MW word documents, as it take times and muany settings to get it correct for green light all the way before uploading can begins.

The bed news is, seems PDF is not a document type iCloud is accepting at present though iCloud said it can.

Just rush to buy the Keynote App, then found out the above !

One step forward, two back?

Any advice will be appriciated.

hi the App "Save to Cloud" is much cheaper than iWorks, and it works for all file formats.

Please take a look here:http://itunes.apple.com/app/save-to-cloud/id460084265?mt=8

I had a reply to this thread long ago when I just launched the App. Recently, I found something great that will be definitely useful tips to people that are using the App "Save to Cloud".

On Mac (Lion, with your iCloud set), you can interact (drag files in, delete files, edit files, create folders...)with your iCloud documents at path: /Users/Your_User_Name/Library/Mobile Documents/MUPXVM5Q6W~com~creiapp~fileincloud/Documents

On Window, I believe there is also a similar path for the iCloud Documents Folder of "Save to Cloud". Excuse me please, that I have't got time to find a PC and check it.

I have been busy writing the update version, will release a new version in early March. Thanks

I too am having a difficult time with ICloud and have the same message as iPorgie ; "when I select iWork in the iCloud in Safari for exmaple, when select Pages, only thing I got is LEARN MORE and GET PAGES FOR IOS." On our IMac we have Iworks and not sure how to upload to Icloud. Also I just purchased Iphone 4S and have not figured how to get documents on their either. Now like I said on the IMac we have Iworks (not sure of the version, its 2 years old) and the Iphone does not have IWorks. Do I need to buy IWorks for the Iphone? I the updated Lion, Itunes and Iphoto (11). what else do I need to get this work? I am getting very frustrated since I normally am pretty savy with computers but this has me stumped big time. I just need cut and dry instructions on how to get it to work and what I need. Thanks for any help PLEASE😕 Lisa

Best, clearest "solution" to this problem, but same on Apple for collecting $10 for the mobile app that gives me nothing, really, as far as a solution to being able to work from my phone to update documents, and from iMac at home when that is available to me. If I was able to remember what needs to change, or did change, I wouldn't buy an app to sync along the way. I'll be asking for a refund on this one. Awful.

Anyway, thank you, Brennan, for offering the closest thing to a solution that there is.

Hi Lisa, I have to purchased the Page App from App Store (€7.99, I thik here in Dublin / EU), which of course will be able to share on the Mac and iPhone / iPad.

Then have to ensure the App ID is set up correctly which can be a bit confusing as this could be a Gmail ID for example whihc Apple gives you a xyz@me.com ID / email also !

You then also have to go to your iPhone>setting>iCloud to set up the Apple ID you set above, and set your doc etc is on onthe same seting page on your iPhone and wait for a little while.

Once all the above setting are correctly done, you will be able to drop your Doc to your Page App under iCloud web site with your Apple ID log in.

But there is still no PDF for the same iCloud arrangement !!!

Best luck and hope all will be OK for you.

Lisa as far as i can make out, you have to buy the apps separately for Mac computers and the IOS devices (iphone and ipad etc). I gave up on the icloud (hopefully the new mac software update will rectify the problems). I too was stumped and I lost a lot of business contacts information from my phone. I have not tried to sync my phone since, and eventually gave up on Pages and Numbers and keynote. I am now using a PC and google for documents and contacts and claendars etc.

My advice is to stop tormenting yourself and wait until Apple get the finger out and sort out these stupid stupid stupid annoying issues.

thanks for response, yes it is tormenting. Finally got the iphone to work but had to by the apps to get it work. Luckily only out $13 more dollars. Crazy thing on the Mac I have Iworks but it seems not to recognize on ICloud. I agree I am going to take a breather and see what happens, the phone support is not the best and wont waist anymore time on it.

thanks for your help! Lisa🙂
