Same issue here with iPhone 4 and iPad 2. Appalling release by Apple. The lack of communication regarding these issues is astounding. Steve would be turning in his grave at the massive reputation damage done with this release and the lack of general community support. Android would be loving it.....speaking of which been meaning to check out an Android for a while now :)

Just thought I'd chime in - having the same problem. I have tried 4 times to update with the same result: "an error occurred while backing up this ipod (-5000).

I am wary of disabling my antivirus/firewall for the amount of time it will take to do the upgrade; why should this be necessary?

I will try again later with Norton disabled later and repost.

Temporarily disable your antivirus software. I had the same issue trying to install iOS 5 until I read some other posts. It worked for me, and I use Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 7. I tried installing iOS 5 three times and got the error (-5000), then disabled Microsoft Security Essentials realtime protection, then it upgraded to iOS 5 just fine. Be sure to re-enable realtime protection after your iPhone/iPod/iPad update.

Well, I truly do appreciate the answers posted on this issue... "but" for Mac users who don't use anti-virus software, this issue is still unresolved. 😟 This is the very first time that I've experienced a software update from Apple that didn't work. Doesn't Apple test their software before releasing it? I mean, this can make them look pretty bad in the public's eye. Hopefully there's a software update that will fix this soon. I've searched online for a resolution and have discovered that there are many people who are experiencing this same problem.
