ios5 upgrade 'could not activate iphone'

Hey guys,

I'm stuck at activating the phone while upgrading to IOS5.

Upgrade seems finished and it happened at the initialization procedure.

It gives 'Your iphone could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily the activation server is temporarily unavailable'

I'm in Canada using Rogers as carrier.

I called Rogers support and was told 'activation server' is indeed Apple's activation server and is required to go to the next step which is to connect to Rogers cellular network.

Support person says I need to keep try to beat the crowd until it's done.

Does anyone's having this issue ?

Thanks,

Y

You haven't provided any information that would allow anyone to help you.

What model phone do you have? What kind of computer? What operating system? Where did you get the phone? Was it sold directly by Apple as unlocked? If it wasn't how was it unlocked? what error do you get? Is there an error number?

The most likely problem is that the phone was unlocked by some unauthorized means, and upgrading it locked it to the carrier it was originally sold for. If that's the case you cannot get help in an Apple forum. If this is not the situation please give us something to go on.

I went to a repair shop today and they said ios5 isant really designed for iphone 3gs only the 4 and 4s, they said thats the reason why people are having problems, so he manage to get into my phone but it wont read any sim cards or get a network. Was working all fine till i updated it from apple, I am not happy at with them. 😟

For every update the operating system is updated, and the baseband (cellular modem) software is updated in sync. If a phone has been unlocked by unauthorized means this is usually done by replacing the baseband with a different one, or hacking the baseband. The iOS version and the baseband version then no longer match. The Apple updater does not check that they match, it assumes they do (because they always will unless the phone has been hacked). For some updates (iOS 5 is one) the update just patches the baseband, so if it's the wrong one the update renders it non-functional. There's only one way the baseband version can get out of sync; if the phone was hacked or jailbroken. However, it would appear from reading this thread that Apple "recycled" some iPhones that were exchanged and that had been hacked without checking. Anyone who got one of these refurbs will have the same problem that an intentionally hacked phone will have.
