When you said "if your SIM is locked" what do you mean?

Do you mean the error "Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported Carriers store to receive a replacement SIM card." or something else?

Also thanks for your on going support and trouble shooting throughout this thread, MacDevil too

Same problem as everyone else. I have a fully unlocked iPhone4 which was replaced over the counter at the Apple Store in mid-April. I tried to update to iOS-5 today, not aware of all the problems people have been having. My phone is now bricked, absolutely useless. This is a major headache as I currently have no phone to make or receive business calls. I have an appointment booked at the Genius Bar tomorrow as from reading this thread it seems the only solution is to get a replacement phone. Coincedentally enough the warranty for my phone expired Sep.07/11 ... Just over 1 month ago.... Seriously hoping that Apple accepts their obvious fault in this matter, and replaces my out of warranty phone for free..... I am an avid Apple fan and user. My iPhone4 is in immaculate shape at over a year old. I was seriously considering getting rid of it for the iPhone4S even though it's not neccessary..... This experience however has been horrible, and reading through 11 pages of other peoples misfortunes and many many wasted hours spent trying to solve this problem and replacing phones I have lost a great deal of respect for Apple as a company, and am seriously considering going back to my Blackberry, or trying out an Android.

Wish me luck at the genius bar tomorrow!! .... until then, i am off the grid! (unwillingly)

So, I should have saved the celebration till after a few days.

My phone spontaneously went into recovery mode displaying some message like "you can't make or receive any calls, please restore your phone." I restored. Then iTunes said: "you're an *******, your SIM card is poop." To which I responded "**** you, ya piece of ****!!!"

I tried restoring it again and then my phone stalled on the Apple logo that is displayed when you start your phone.

Finally it started, then I got the regular lock screen with the time and everything, so I thought "okay good, I should just be able to unlock and...GAWD DAMMIT!"

And, now my iTunes is frozen.

Apple is gonna hear some **** tomorrow!! ERRRR, I'm so mad.

Oh, iTunes is unfrozen now. It says: "There is no SIM card installed in the iPhone you are attempting to activate. Please disconnect and insert a SIM card in the iPhone and please don't try to unearth Steve Jobs' body. It won't save our company from this ridiculous glitch."

ARRGRGGGGGGGGHHH!!

Losing perspective. MacDevil...help.

Got my iPhone 4 in march.. replaced under warranty in may.. bricked by the update thursday night and replaced in the apple store on saturday.. I talked to the rep at my local at&t store and he made sure my IMEI number matched in their database. Sounds like I need to make sure that the IMEI and serial numbers match in Apple's database before I update again..

and due to eTalismans troubles and the fact that I'm out of the country for 3 weeks out of the month. I'm thinking I may stay with 4.3.5 till I get back home next month.

I don't have the IMEI of my original phone, or the box or paperwork.. Is there any other way to get the original number?

hi...

what is the solution anyway???

ask apple and my carrier to make the serial number and the IMEI match..? because if this is the solution i'm *******...

the phone is from UK and i'm now in Germany so i can't go to my network provider store and i don't have a apple store near by...

the problem will only be solved for everyone when Apple them self release an update that fix all this problem...

i will be thankfull if someone suggest me anything that i can do to have my problem fixed in the mean time..

Thank you

I too have had the problem re invalid sim after the upgrade to IOS5.

I rang apple today, and after explaining the issue, they immediately knew the problem I was talking about. They stated they have had issues with the mismatch of serial numbers after replacement phones have been issued.

After taking a few details I was referred to a more senior technican, who took my current IMEI and serial number, and aslo the original ones from the box that I still have. He stated they are very busy at the moment, but it should take no more than 48 hours for him to investigate the mismatch and correct it. He advised that I could try restoring the software to the phone every 12 hours or so to see whether the issue has been resolved.

He stated there is no permanant sim block, and that once the numbers match, the sim should be accepted, but only after a full restore.

I found the team very helpful, and I was given a direct email address for me to contact him if I had any further issues. I will advise with any progress!

iOS 5 update "Sim not compatible" SOLUTION!!!

Ok so after going to the apple store and at&t multiple times I went to apple and got a replacement. I brought the replacement I paid $79.00 plus tax for home and plugged it into itunes. The same issue came up on a new device with iOS 5.0 installed. Now i am using an iPhone 3GS. So i called apple and got some awesome help.

The issue is that the "profile" associate with the phone is incorrect. My phone's profile was set for Germany even though I have never been there.

This is the reason the device wouldn't activate properly, even though there was a hardware change.

Simply call apple if your device is out of warranty or in warranty and tell them that there is a "sim not supported" issue with your device. If they say you need to pay for the phone support tell them this is an exception since there is a profile issue with your account through apple.

The profile must have been altered or switched during the iOS 5.0 update. This is an apple profile issue. It is not the device, your computer, itunes, or any other concievable idea. It's all on apple's servers.

This is a solution for all iOS 5.0 Compatible Devices

Good Luck and if this helps please like my post!

Matt

I wonder if this is my problem too, even though my iPhone wasn't a replacement I did buy it in Canada and are using it in New Zealand so it could be some weird serial, imei thing?

Apple said they'd call me back today so if they do I'll ask them...

Ok something odd, just as I was about to post this I picked my phone up to re-read the error message and it's given me the option to set it up as a new phone or to restore it from iCloud or iTunes.

Ok so My phone is working now?

After 7 days of "only compatible SIM cards..." it is working like normal?

magic? perhaps.
