lock screen notifications not working

I just upgraded to iOS 5, and I have an iPhone 3G S 32GB. Notifications are working -- I receive them, badges work, the pulldown works -- but I don't see any notifications on the lockscreen. I've double checked to make sure that all the apps I want have "View in Lock Screen" on, but nothing is showing in the lock screen. When I double tap the home button, the camera icon pops up, so that's working. But no notifications.

Anybody have any suggestions, or experiencing the same problem?

I'm amazed that you are all complaining about it. It's meant to be locked so that noone can see what's in your phone surely - isn't it all about privacy? My problem that brought me to the post was that my notifications weren't showing and that was fixed by changing notification settings.

Maybe I have a different viewpoint - my new iphone 4s is the first iphone I have had having just come from blackberry. The iphone is so great and I'm loving using it! And I've never had the option to have calendar viewed from a locked screen on any phone I've had so I think you were all very lucky before 🙂

Would be nice to have the option as I assume this was an option in previous iphones.

There are a number of issues to fix this:

1. You cannot view the "Notification Centre" from the lock screen.

2. You can have all your NEW notifications appear in your lock screen by changing the settings in Settings>Notifications>(and then select that app).

3. You also have to ensure you are allowing notifications within the App itself, inside the App's settings.

Here are a few hints:

  • If you have the "Alert Style" set to "None" - they won't show up, even if you turn them "On".
  • If you set to "Banners" they will show up as Banners while your phone is unlocked, and also as a Banner on the Lock screen (if the lock screen setting is set to "on"). From the lock screen you can "swipe" the notification, and it will take you right to that app.
  • If you set as "Alerts" - it will require you to select an action before proceeding - in which case you must "unlock the phone", and the rest of any notifications on your lock screen will not longer be considered new - and won't show up again when you lock your phone.

My recommendation: Set them all as Banners, and then you have more options. Once you "Unlock" your phone, all of them will be removed from your lock screen, but you can then see them in the Notification Centre.

Some exmples:

Facebook: you need to select Settings>Notification>Facebook. If you want your notifications from Facebook to show up on your phone, select "Notification centre: ON". Select the Alert Style. If you want to see them in your lock screen, turn "View in Lock Screen:ON." THEN, go to Settings>Facebook>Push Notifications, and select the ones you would like. They will show up on your phone.

EMAIL: Settings>Notifications>Mail. If you want your notifications from your email accounts to show up on your phone, select "Notification centre: ON". Select the Alert Style. If you want to see them in your lock screen, turn "View in Lock Screen:ON." THEN go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>and select the Mail Account you would like notifications for.. Depending on the account type you may need to change your "push or fetch" settings.

TEXT: Settings>Notifications>Messages If you want your notifications from texts to show up on your phone, select "Notification centre: ON". Select the Alert Style. If you want to see them in your lock screen, turn "View in Lock Screen:ON." If you want to see the whole message, select "Show Preview: ON", "OFF will just display the name of the person who sent the text".

Jeez. I just upgraded from 4.3.2 jailbroken, because I thought NC would provide info on the lock screen. How naive am I ? Apple why oh why do you continue to limit the functionality of your phones?? The whole point of a touch screen is its limitless potential for customisation. You can have buttons anywhere, gestures to open stuff, etc etc. I can't believe you are so short sighted!! Why be second best to Android in functionality, listen to your paying customers.

My phone was way better before with SBS settings and Lock info. Not to mention all the other tweaks. Roll on the next jailbreak. Rubbish apple, just sad really.

That worked Demcob. You should have credit for those situations

where the phone is the problem, not merely user error re Settings,

which apparently is the situation with most of the posters here. You

have employed the technique of Toggling on/off - which solves lots

of problems in programmable electronics. Good on you and g/f.

That's an assumption. You might lock your screen - without using a passcode - just so buttons don't get accidentally activated. No real privacy there.

Anyway, here's my issue: I lock my screen (iOS5, iPhone 4s) using a passcode so that my data is private but the calendar app, if I have notifications set on for locked screen, displays alerts for calendar items. So far all is working as it should. If I set "View in Lock Screen" to "Off" for Calendar, then when a reminder alert occurs, the phone makes a sound but does not display any information - even though my Alert Style settings still say "Banners" or "Alerts". What I'm expecting to happen is when I unlock my phone, to see the banner or the alert - but this doesn't happen.

Pretty useless reminder if you don't hear the alert and/or don't immediately check the phone.

What I would like to happen is when I unlock the phone, the alerts for the transpired calendar alerts should appear ... but they don't. :/

Basically I couldn't receive my push notifications on my ipad until I went to:

facebook app>settngs>notifications>email notifications> and I ticked option: ALL NOTIFICATIONS, EXCEPT THE ONES YOU UNSUBSCRIBE FROM!

Then I could tick or untick any PUSH NOTIFICATIONS settings! And since then I had no issues with receiving push notifications.
