iCloud MobileMe IMAP rejected password

Greetings,


After moving my MobileMe account to iCloud, I am now getting an error message in mail that states:


The MobileMe IMAP server “p99-imap.mail.me.com” rejected the password for user “xxxxxxx”


It keeps popping up a window asking me to enter my me.com password, but won't accept my password.


I googled this error and see a bunch of threads here and other places about problems with IMAP passwords and this same error message back in 2008/2009. But I've never seen this error before, and since it happed just after the transition to iCloud, I suspect it is realted.


Any suggestions?

I had this same problem for five days on both my iMac and MacBook. It came out of the blue two months after migrating from MobileMe to iCloud. After spending many frustrating hours trying to resolve the problem on my own (based on suggested solutions in the various Apple support threads), I made a Genius appointment. The Mac Genius used Roger Wilmut's solution (see link below) to solve the problem right in the store for my MacBook. I went home and repeated the same process for my iMac, which again immediately corrected the problem.


FYI Both my iMac and my MacBook are OS X Leopard (Version 10.5.8)

Note: One difference: For my Macs (compared to Roger's "Add Account" image) there was an extra box titled "Create Account Automatically". You should deselect that box before proceeding.
