With iOS 5 can't edit contacts !
i'm having the same issue. Any update on how to do it?? Cant delete or edit contacts??
Sorry, double tap on home button in lock screen
It may work to turn iCloud on but it is FORCING us to merge our contacts & thereby choose function over privacy. I am not a paranoid person but the first thing this download wanted to do was track my location. There are also many other.bugs with this latest update. Anyone know how to do it without giving access to my list to iCloud?
Had the same problem, and Restore worked for me. However, for one reason or the other, I lost some apps and lost all music loaded, even if i restored using the backup i had just made prior to doing the restore.
using a 3gs.
Okay now it works. Thanks to all for the feedback and direction.
Didn't work for me because I have MobileMe. So turned off iCloud and followed these directions to turn on MobileMe on 4S. Will deal with cloud later after moving MacBook pro to lion.
My problem with iOS5 on 4S was that I had not turned on MobilMe on phone. See these instructions:
Thanks to a message on this board, I found the solution. It involves turning on MobileMe calendar synching in Settings.
Explained in detail on this page:

........
After you update your iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 4 (or later), follow the calendar syncing setup instructions below.
For more information about iOS software, visit the iOS Software Update webpage.
To set up calendar syncing on your iPhone or iPod touch:
If you have iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 4 (or later) and MobileMe Calendar syncing is turned on, MobileMe Calendar is set up automatically.
1. On your iPhone or iPod touch Home screen, tap Settings.
2. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
3. Tap your MobileMe account. If you don’t see your account, make sure you’ve set it up on your device.
4. Make sure that Calendars is on.
5. If prompted, choose “Merge with MobileMe” to make sure the calendars already on your device are not duplicated.
6. Press the Home button, and then tap Calendar. Your MobileMe calendar is displayed in the Calendar application on your iPhone or iPod touch. It may take a few minutes to appear.

Hey! Thanks a million 🙂 It totally worked. Have a great day...
I also couldn't edit contacts except favorites. As recommended, I went to iCloud, 'merged' my contacts in the cloud and voila. I got DUPLICATES of everything as well as names I don't even recognize. This well and truly is software that's not been tested properly.
Anybody have any solutions to the contacts issue that really will work, not duplicate and put in specious names?
THANK YOU ! ! !
YOUR A GENIUS!! THANK YOU, IVE BEEN STRUGGLING FOR A WEEK! god bless.
I tried this and it seemed to work. When you get a text message from the person, tap the "edit" button on the right upper corner. That seems to be the quickest way to edit existing contacts. Annoying but works. I spelled one of my friend's name wrong and just wanted to fix it and there was no "+" button.
Omg thanks so much for figuring this out, I was getting so frustrated with not being able to add/edit contacts and events to calendar! 😀
Try to connect your iphone in computer, in itune restore the iphone as a new one. (it worked for me)
Or delete you contacts app from iphone and sync again.
Good luck

I resynced my phone to my Itunes on my computer and then turned my phone off and left for 30 seconds then restarted.
I switched on contacts in settings / iCloud and problem fixed
THIS DID IT !!
