i figured it out!!! after waiting almost an at the Apple store (even after making an appt) the guy tells me to just restore my entire phone....not knowing how long it would take to restore everything back ( a couple of hours) and that did nothing for me!!! I went into Settings> mail, contacts, calendars> accounts> ICloud....from there I deleted ICloud as one of my accounts because I dont use it since I dont have an Apple computer it does nothing for me. Well after doing that I went back to my contacts and the Edit tab finally came back!!! Good to know these Genius Bar people wasted around 3 hours of my time!!

Ok for all of u who are still stuck and nothing is working I think I have finally solved the base issue. For me it was an issue with my mail account and iCloud. I could add contacts and edit them but as soon as I went back to the main list any changes I made would disappear. I had turned iCloud on and off, deleted existing iCloud backups, turned contacts in and off in iCloud a zillion dam times and could not get rid off the problem. I was ready to throw the phone out the window an restore it but kept on playing and I solved it.

If you have multiple email accounts go into each one and turn contacts off.

As soon as I turned them off I could edit add delete etc... The one that was causing my problem was my yahoo.com account. After u can edit again u can turn them back on.

Hope this helps!!!!

I have the same problem...updated it a few weeks ago and now its starting to do my head in that I can't add/edit my contacts. I've tried doing what you suggested but every time I try and turn contacts on in icloud, the merge with pc comes up and when I click on it it just disappears back to the homescreen. I can't get into mail, calendars and contacts in settings either and I've restored it, re-set it etc. Anyone know what I can do?

Dude it solution made everyone's day but me:p. you said when u turn it on don't worry about the "Merge" thin ... Well here what I've done : Home screen>setting>iCloud>celendar and mail are successfully on , but here comes the problem the contacts...I can't turn'em on each time I try to turn it on they ask me to merge and with a message that says:"the contact you previously synced with your pc will be merged with iCloud" and ofcourse I clicked on merge but then it crashed before the merge even started so basically the setting were not saved as contact -ON. And it crashes too when I try to acces Mail, contacts, celendar at setting... Please help?? Sorry if I wrote so much incorrect things I'm writing this on my iPhone :)

Here's another approach to this that might work for people who have multiple iDevices on their iTunes/iCloud account, like I do. The root of the issue for me is my teen son has a different Contact list on his iPhone than my wife and I do on our other iDevices. My wife and I share contacts on iCloud. We don't want to merge with my son's contacts (his thousand friends) nor does he need our contacts. And we didn't want to duplicate the common contacts. But since the Contacts setting under iCloud on my son's iPhone is off, he couldn't edit his Contacts.

My solution was, since I'm running Windows7 and Microsoft Outlook, to sync my son's Contacts only with Outlook on our PC (under the Info settings on iTunes). Once I enabled that, he could edit his Contacts again. His Contacts only sync to the PC, while our Contacts only sync to iCloud, keeping them separate.

As a bonus I do have the ability to check out my son's Contacts should I choose to. Trust but verify as they say... 😉

EDIT: I should add that my son's iPhone does use the iCloud to sync the same library as our iDevices as well as the same Calendar. Which is why we needed to use iCloud at all.
