The person who commented below about iCloud helping to resolve this issue was right. In your settings, Go to iCloud and merge your contacts, calendars, etc. If you can't figure out how to do this, try signing out of iCloud and signing back in, and it should ask you. I have had this problem for about a couple months now and this worked for me. I was able to scroll down on each contact and click on "delete contact."

I am afraid to place my contacts on the iCloud for privacy concerns and a dozen other reasons (especially after reading nightmare accounts on inline forums).

I came across this posted solution (which worked for me) after hours of searching and failing:

  • I seem to have fixed it for my particular situation. Logged on to iTunes to do a Connected (NOT iCloud) sync.
  • Went to Info and checked "Sync Contacts With" and then checked "Outlook".

Then I synced and the "+" button magically appeared! My nightmare ended!

PS: The original poster added these instructions (which weren't necessary for me):

Made sure that "Selected Groups" was checked and then checked "iPhone". Also checked "Add Contacts to...". When I did the sync I selected he "Merge to this computer" so all the info on my iPhone was merged with my contact manager within Outlook. As soon as the sync was done the + and Edit features re-appeared.

Well, i had this problem and i searched for a lot of time for an answer.

My main problem was that i use my contacts on google, and my contacts on iCloud was filled with my 128374192837469812376498 facebook "friends", I do not know why Apple decide to mix facebook contacts on local contacts with google contacts and upload all this mess with iCloud (and off course, show it in double on my cell phone).

Then i bought an iPhone 5 about a week ago, and was trying to do all the set up as usual, and it was not syncing my google contacts, and on top of that, there was no plus ➕ sign on the contacts.

The only way to make that work is to use the dirty iCloud, and i used it for a while, then i read an article saying that google has disabled activesync for non paying users. and that if you still wanted to sync your contacts, you should add a cardDAV account. I DID AND IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM!

no double contacts, everything is back on like it was before.

I wanted to use the iOS 9 Contacts feature, Add Related Name, to allow Siri to respond to commands like "Call my sister."

I could see my Contact card listed in my iPhone 5S (using iOS 9.3.2) but it was dimmed on the Search list, and I could not click on the list item to open the Contact Card. I was unable to edit or even to view my card info.

Designating another card as "My Info" under Settings/General/Mail, Contacts, Calendar did not help this at all.

Then, relying on someone else's post, I deleted the FaceBook app and restarted my iPhone.

Now I can edit the Contact Card for My Info just like any other Contact card.

Thanks, FaceBook, for preventing proper use of the Apple Contacts app - you're fired!
