I think you are right. Manual syncs - in so far as they are still possible these days - are infinitely preferable.
Narrow escape? Tell me about it! I am still shuddering from the trauma of "almost" losing all my contacts and calendar events from my Outlook 2010. There was no warning, no explanation. Yeah, I could see the .pst file was still there and eventually I twigged that contacts and calendars had been removed to separate folders for syncing with the i-cloud. Thank you to the kind person(s) who gave the info about signing out of i-cloud. It looks like everything is back where it was, including the categories for the contacts. But it was a close shave!
I recently bought an ipod touch. I am tempted by the new ipad-mini. [Apple undoubtedly make impressive devices.] Still getting my head round i-tunes, USB, everything. I just wanted to see if outlook data could find its way onto the Touch. Found a youtube clip recommending "simplest way is to use cloud".Much against my better judgement, I suppose, I was tempted. Since reading posts on this thread I realise I have got off lightly - no duplications or other jumble - I am so relieved!
I'll forget about contacts and calendar on the ipod. Not worth the hassle. I reckon I prefer to delete the cloud thing altogether too. It should be OK just downloading apps over wifi, shouldn't it?
For anyone interested - best solution for reliably syncing in both directions, and with categories, Outlook calendar events, contacts, tasks and notes between a phone and a computer WAS without doubt the old Windows CE devices and Window PC. Currently, the best solution IS Blackberry devices [OS 4 thru 7 only] and any Windows PC. I am of course talking about USB-syncing, a procedure which takes place in the room that me, my phone and my computer are currently sitting in, and NOWHERE else. My confidential data remains that way throughout. I have found a good system that does not adulterate, drop, duplicate or otherwise subvert the data in the process, and for as long as these relatively ancient devices work, I shall continue to use them.
