Sure I had same trouble and I fixed it.. When you download the file from the email, it downloads it with extension .m4a I mean namefile.m4a it should be namefile.m4r so just rename the file changing the extension.
With a Mac point on the file cmd+i then change file name as above . then drag them to your itune ringtone library and sync it worked for me....
Thanks for your input! After many long hours for 1 ringtone, I finally got it to work!! Now I'm going to bed....
May be the wrong thread to post to but this may be useful
I just upgraded from an iPhone 3Gs to a 4Gs and I have spent several hours trying to get my custom ring tone installed.
I've been trying to follow the suggestions in this discussion with no joy - until I finally figured out that I was missing something.
In the menu in the left of iTunes I did not have an entry called "Tones" under Library (I did not know I should have had one) - when I clicked on my device and went to the Tones tab I could see my ringtone listed and assumed it was properly in the library. I tried all the un-ticking sync & tick & sync routine (really tedious when you have over 3,000 songs) with no joy
Finally fixed it by finding the ringtone on my hard drive and moving it to somewhere else iTunes did not know about then I deleted every reference to the ring tone I could find in the library.
sync everything
Then import the ringtone from it's new location and all of a sudden the "Tones" option appears under Library in the left hand menu.... Joy and Happiness :-)
Now I can click on the device, go to the tones tab & select the tone to sync - sync again and it worked
Hope that helps someone
Thanks! It worked great. Its actually really simple. Add the folder/files into the "tones" folder of your library and then just highlight the tones you want and drag them to "devices." You don't even have to worry about the "tones" tab under devices as long as you click on the general sync button and not the sync tones button.
I tried all the suggestions on this forum. None worked for me. Finally, I noticed that the ringtones I purchased were not checked off in iTunes under "Store->Purchased". I checked them off, resynched and it worked.
My m4r files show in tones but I get an error stating that they won't play on the iphone. And I can see that I convert to M4A, change the start and stop to less than 30 seconds, save as M4R and play so the file moves to tones. However when it does this it saves the original song time. I think thats the problem 😟
It was the problem. I trimmed the file I wanted, in Quick Time and then saved as an M4R.
Seriously Apple - Its supposed to be a snazzy iPhone, it shouldn't be that complicated. I remember changing alarm and tones on old samsungs and Sony Erricson's straight out the box years ago 😟
ok First things first you cannot sync ur ringtones directly thru itunes and keep music videos and movies etc
you have to use i funbox and put ur ringtones onto ur iphone there is a special menu for ringtones only hope this helps gotta 3gs on ios 5.1.1.reply with any feed back
This is the answer - thanks!
Thank you so much. This worked. Like you, I had tried so many things to make this work and was really getting frustrated.
I had this problem (my iPhone has been upgraded to iOS 5.1.1). I followed the procedure suggested by nuprin7676 (about the fourth post in this long sequence) and it worked just fine. To reiterate:
A further response ... I just read Bos_Boi's post above.
That is not true. I just synced my ringtones through iTunes using the procedure just described and this had no effect on my music. Everything that was there is still there (on my phone and on my computer). No special equipment, programs, or magic incantations were required.

It may be the case if the user is trying to add ringtones via a computer that wasn't used to add other content to the iPhone....

OMG. SOMEBODY HELP ME.
Okay, I figured out how to make ringtones. I added an app, called ringtone maker. It showed to how to make it and how to get it on my Iphone 4S. I already had 5 ringtones on my phone from doing this previously. I pushed the sync button, and then it added the new ringtone on my phone with the others. BUT it deleted all my music, how ANNOYING. So then I went back and tried to add all my music back, and I did. And this time it deleted all of my custom made ringtones. Ive been sitting here for hours googling and trying to figure it out, please some help me! Im about to have a MENTAL BREAK DOWN. They shouldnt have made something that should be so simple, so hard. HELP!!
