iphone 4+iOS 5: volume issue when using bluetooth carkit (VW passat '11)

hi

i searched all over the net and i didnt find any record of my problem.

i got the iphone 4. it used to run 4.3.3 it worked perfectly. even with my newly VW passat with the RSN310

since i installed ios 5 i found improvements(display wise) but a few downsiders (very annoying ones)

whenever my phone connects with my car, my ringer sound & music sound goes flatlined. (all the way down to nearly mute)
settings > sounds

&

music (airplay)

now if i want to stream my music trough the speakers i dont hear anything unless i raise the volume to MAX and its like a mouse sound. (barely hearable)

(to stream music, i just press MEDIA on my car dash board)

in order to correctly play and hear incomming calls i have to do the following:

wait for phone to connect, then go settings > sounds, raise ringer volume (for incomming calls), then go to music, raise the volume and only THEN i may press Media on my car dashboard to play music & hear incomming calls.

quite some process compared to what used to work fine 3 days ago (even taking into considerations that my RSN 310 didnt display the song info back then, but with ios5 is gives me artis, albmum & song tittle.)

I've had the same issues with my 2011 GTI.

When I approached Apple with the bluetooth "Dial Up Failed" issue. They stated it was VW's fault and not the new iPhone 4s, but I did a little research. The newer iphone (above the 3GS) are working on a newer bluetooth technology. Thus, rendering them pretty much useless to previous bluetooth technology systems.

I discovered the issue by purchasing a SIM card adapter to allow me to use the 4S SIM card in my 3GS phone and it works fine. Now, I'm just stuck with using an outdated iPhone, but I can at least receive and make handsfree calls now. I've switched back and forth a couple of times and through elimination that it has to be the iphone and the new bluetooth technology. I advise anyone to try this method... if you want a phone that works with your handsfree system.

Or... switch to an Android based phone with the standard 3.0 bluetooth technology and skip all the bluetooth issues.

I've had my 2011 GTI checked out by two different dealers and they all have said there is nothing wrong with the bluetooth system in my VW. So I decided to run a little test myself. Here is what I found out.

I have a 2009 Golf GTI and until October '12 I had an iPhone 4S which had this exact same issue. It is a hardware problem with certain batches of iPhone 4S (mostly early ones as far as I can gather from others with the same issue). It certainly isn't VW's fault. I had a 3GS previously (which my partner now has) and it works fine without this issue in the same car on the same version of iOS. In October I upgraded to an iPhone 5 (and sold my 4S on ebay) and now the iPhone 5 works fine in the same car. The only solution is to change the phone, but the problem is definitely gone in later iPhone 4S models and in the iPhone 5 as I know several others who had the problem, have replaced the phone with either a later 4S or a 5 and it's fixed. I have heard of several cases where customers have gone into an apple store, kicked up a fuss about this issue and got a later iPhone 4S which as I said works without this issue.
