By the way, it wasn't '52, it was '67. Despite what you think, I wasn't old enough to drive in 1952.
You do realize that I was just having a little fun with you here - just making a joke ....
This is indeed a bug. Safari starting crashing for me as soon as I updated. That certainly qualifies as a bug.
Same situation here. Running perfectly before upgrade, keeping crashing after. I do NOT care whether it should be called a bug! I did not do anything wrong except the upgrade to ios5, can I downgrade?

I knew that. I just wanted to clarify.
Now, back to your issue. I fully realize that Pittsburgh is in the "boonies" but there are two Apple Stores there that I know of. Have you demonstrated the problem to the local Genius? My belief is that your iPad has a hardware problem that did not reveal itself until stressed by the latest IOS. Of course, you can continue to believe that it's a software bug and live with the crashes. New IOS releases certainly will not stress the iPad any less.

Definition of a computer bug is "A problem that needs fixing," not a problem that has to affect absolutely everybody. At least according to the Wikipedia Dictionary.
I wonder if you could identify where those words appear in the Wikipedia definition?

Based on my 30 years of experience as a software engineer, this is a software issue. A new IOS will use more memory and run out of memory unless managed properly, ergo a software issue. Hence the request to fix it. I have demonstrated that certain web sites cause Safari crashes and the "fix" was to disable Java. So that certainly points to a software issue. Even if it were a hardware issue, one this extensive would need a software workaround. So either way, a software fix is the solution.
In any event, it would be nice for Apple to address this issue.
Safari on my iPad doesn't crash since I restore it to factory settings... it is a bit slow, though. When I open it and want to write a webpage address or google something, it takes a while for it to start recognizing what I'm typing. Other than that, it's normal now... Maybe try to restore it to factory settings without restoring it from any backup, like if it was a new iPad. It *****, but it worked out for me.

Based on your thirty years of experience, exactly what did Apple tell you when you demonstrated the problem to the local Apple "Genius?"
Exactly the same problem here, original iPad and iOS 5.0.1. No issues with earlier iOS versions. I agree completely with the majority of comments that Apple needs to address this problem ASAP.
From my observations it's clear that the iOS 5 version of Safari is significantly less stable than the previous version although it is a bit faster (especially on Javascript-rich sites). The crashes are random and appear to be due to errors in memory-management probably resulting in address violation errors.
It's possible that some people don't see these failures simply because they don't visit sites with the right content to trigger them.
Although there may be a few things that an end-user can do to minimize the occurrence of these errors there is really nothing one can do to eliminate them and retain the full functionality of Safari (turning off Javascript isn't really an option).
The fix for this will have to come from Apple.
To inform Apple of these problems please report them with details to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

It does not take much digging to find them. For me, these - hardly graphic-intensive - Apple Support Communities web pages are those that constantly cause iPad Safari to crash.
I figured it was down on the list, below live bugs and other pests.

What did the Apple "Genius" say when you showed him/her the problem?

Mine has been absolutely flawless and I am by no means the only person that can say that. That is certainly not the characteristics of a bug.
He's right! Mine has been flawless as well. iOS 5.0.1 on iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. All have seen improvements.
