Safari constantly crashes on IOS 5 for ipad

Safari is constantly crashing on my original iPad after updating to IOS 5. Try surfing Apple's website! I can't get passed one page.

I certainly cannot speak for Numerator747, and I admit that I have not been to the Genius Bar with my iPad yet. You may be absolutely correct in your assessment, but this "problem" has been widely reported by all sorts of users and this is one of the reasons why I believe that it must be fixed by Apple.

"I've had problems with Safari crashing on my iPad1 ever since downloading iOS5. Techrunch.com crashes virtually everytime I open it. Other sites crash frequently - probably 2-10 times per hour of web usage. I've been to the genius bar 4 times. The first two times they deleted the os and I then restored (not from backup.) This didn't work. The third time they gave me a new iPad1. Still, no better. On each visit they told me they had never seen this problem. On the fourth visit, they finally checked this site and said since it's a common problem Apple is aware of it and they would probably release an update at some point. In the meantime, there is nothing to do but suffer. It's extremely annoying. If iPad2s had this issue there would be huge stink. One thing that does help is using the Opera browser, which can be downloaded from the app store. I've had no problems with it, even on techcrunch.com. Opera loads about as quickly as Safari and scrolling through web pages is much smoother and faster than Safari."

Is the story reliable? I am inclined to think that it is. It is a memory issue - all of the crash logs that are documented in the Usage and Data setting on my iPad are telling me that low memory is causing the crashes. How is that a hardware problem?

The fact that the majority of users are not experiencing problems is encouraging and would be the expected outcome with a software update. That does not mean that plenty of other users do not have "problems" that an update would help alleviate.

Apple is capable of making mistakes and missing the boat once in a while and I think that maybe they did on this one.

Finally - if this update really did reveal a hardware problem on my iPad, and all of these other user's iPads as well - then I must asume that there are way too many poorly built iPads out there that finally "broke down" once they were updated to iOS 5.

The reality is that you don't know if Apple could have and would have fixed your problem.

Considering that the vast majority of users are not having problems, it does not make sense that a replacement iPad experienced the identical problem. Further, it has been stated in this thread that this very forum exhibits the problem. That makes it rather difficult for Apple to blame the web site. I would be at the Genius bar quietly insisting that something be done. If the first replacement doesn't do the job, I'd want another... Eventually I'd get one that works properly.

I agree wholeheartedly. That's the result of off-shore manufacturing. "You get what you pay for."

Whether the problem occurs or not depends on the memory state of the iPad, the web sites visited in Safari, the links clicked, etc, etc, etc. This is the nature of software memory management bugs.

From what I ahve seen there is clearly a bug in iOS 5 Safari/Webkit but whether you see if or not depends on your hardware iPad 1/iPad 2 and exactly what you do. Since the circumstances of the bug are so complex it is hard to reliably reproduce. It does certainly seem to be a bug in Apple's Webkit and the bug was introduced (or made worse) in iOS 5.

I have seen the bug myself although it does not occur often enough in my circumstances to be a real problem.

I'm relatively sure by this point that Apple development is aware of this problem but it doesn't hurt to continue to report it with details at:

Is the OP is incorrect?

What about this post?

Ihave been experiencing the same issue with safari CONSTANTLY crashing on myiPad 1. Is Apple going to issue some kind of fix soon?

There are many more like that but I've got to run.

I don't understand the point of your trolling, Philly_Phan?

"...the result of off-shore manufacturing. You get what you pay for."?

How would that explain what many including myself have reported, that our iPads worked just fine on iOS 4.x, and Safari started crashing on iOS 5? Clearly, many other contributors in this thread have much more plausible explanations on what's going on, so please stop diminishing this issue.

I would have posted sooner, but my iPad 2 keeps crashing... J/K... Well, kinda...

I've contacted apple several times about safari crashing. I have the exact same issues with consistent crashes on my iPhone 4S as well as my iPad 2. I never had an issue that I can recall with any of my previous original iPads or iPhones or with my iPad 2 with any version of iOS 4... All of my issues of crashing have come after installing iOS 5...

I can replicate my issue at any given time, 99% of my crashes happen when I'm replying to a private message in any forum using vbulletin software.

I have another iPad that still has iOS 4.xxx on it and I basically have to use it now to successfully complete any messages in those forums without having to worry about a crash right in the middle of the response.

To me this easily provides solid information that iOS 5 is the culprit.

Have you demonstrated this issue with the "Genius" at the local Apple Store? If so, what were you told?

What's with the denial?

No denial. Statement of fact.

I suffer dozens upon dozens of crashes per day on my iPad ever since updating the OS, whereas I doubt I had ten in the prior year under earlier versions of the OS. In addition, I continually receive bogus "server not available" errors.

What did the local "Apple Genius" say when you demonstrated this to him/her?
