The thread is pretty old but I'm happy to report that this problem may now be fixed at least for people who can temporarily activate Personal Hotspot. I'm using an iPad2, iPhone 5S, and iOS7.
I strongly prefer to use WiFi, not Bluetooth, for Keynote Remote because it's more reliable. However, at the moment WiFi is no longer an option. So... to link via Bluetooth:
- In iPhone Settings, turn on Personal Hotspot and Bluetooth.
- In iPad Settings, turn on Bluetooth. You can then link Bluetooth from the iPad by selecting "iPhone" from the list of choices. For whatever reason, this does not work in reverse (i.e., you can't link by selecting "iPad" from the iPhone).
- Launch Keynote and Keynote Remote respectively.
- In Keynote, click the wrench and select “Advanced” and then “Remote”... to finalize the link.
With that done, you can now turn off Personal Hotspot. Keynote and Remote will link via Bluetooth automatically thereafter, no Hotspot required. Be patient, it can take a few seconds after starting Keynote and Remote.
This is especially important (Hotspot off) because iOS7 appears to have broken Keynote Remote when Hotspot is "on" as I describe here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5351254
Is anyone else having this problem? I'd like to get back to using the more reliable WiFi / Personal Hotspot mode.
