From what I can tell there is a memory management bug when using the First Generation IPAD with iOS version 5.0.1 and using the SAFARI application. The problem occurs when a large website is downloaded by SAFARI. This causes SAFARI to crash on low memory. This also generates a low memory report to be sent to apple. One website that is large and consistently causes SAFARI to crash on low memory is (http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com). I hope that Apple knows that there is a problem and corrects this. I have IPAD model MC497LL, with iOS version 5.0.1, this is a first generation IPAD with both wifi and AT@T service, with 64 gigabytes of storage memory.

Philly,

Since you have an iPad that seems to be bullet proof, would you care to login to my corporate FMS web site and see if it crashes your Safari? If you're willing to give it a try, we can exchange the link and login informatin via e-mail. Seriously, I can't get a single one of our new iPads to make it past the login without crashing and going back to home screen.

Thanks.

We're forbidden to exchange personal information on the forum and, honestly, I kinda think that I like that rule. Besides, I don't know what good it will do for you. Suppose I get in without a crash. What will you do? On the other hand, suppose my iPad crashes. Again, what will you do? It's truly a lose-lose situation. I've never denied that others are having problems. However, my position has been and continues to be that the malfunctioning iPad(s) should be taken to an Apple Store. The problem should be demonstrated and then sit back and wait for a fix.

Repeating what I had said earlier (to whom, I forget), do NOT demand specific action such as DFU because, if that doesn't work, the reasonable response from the Apple rep is "We did what you wanted." That's why your position should be that you want your iPad to function properly (i.e., Safari usage without crashes).

If Apple is unable or (unwilling) to resolve your problems, you realistically have two choices. One is to sell your iPad(s) on eBay and the other is to learn to live with the problems. You are not accomplishing anything by beating your head against the wall.

Finally, I would also add that if you can't get past the login, that's a major problem. On the other hand, if you experience a crash after ten minutes at a site AND a Safari restart immediately brings you right back to where you were, I personally wouldn't consider that a big deal.

Getting sick of this.

Most of my friends have noticed loss of performance, crashes etc since upgrading. Depends on how my gestures, large apps and icloud you use.

I refuse to take half a day to go to an apple story to have some lowlife low level tech shcek the on off switch. Apple screwed up, and Apple shoudl solve the issues and apologize.

I wasn't aware of the forum policy but thanks for calling it to my attention.

Entering the login will result in a crash 100% of the time. Since we can't make it past the login, when Safari is re-opened, you're right back to where it is going to crash if you try again. As such, it's futile and unless.

Thanks for the advice on eBay. Another option would be to take them back to Apple and demand a full refund which is becoming more emminent as my frustration grows with Apple's ineptitude in providing support. I really does seem to come down to either it works and if it doesn't... [crickets chirping].

Hank, I've posted this a couple of times recently and it helped me. I had tried everything including a restore to factory settings and nothing helped for long.

1). First check your Diagnostics and Usage Settings > About > Diagnostics and Usage and see if you are having crashes due to low memory.

2). Although my iPad is an iPad 2 I found a thread on MacRumors on optimizing memory for iPad 1's. The first thing mentioned was to turn off Spotlight Search, or at least the ones you don't need helpers for. Since I don't ever use Spotlight Search I disabled all of them. Settings> General > Spotlight Search

Since doing this almost 3 weeks ago I haven't had any crashes. I'm still seeing low memory issues in the Diagnostics but it's not causing crashes so I'm ok. As I posted on another thread no one has replied that they have tried this and said it worked for them so I don't know how helpful it will be for you but before you take your iPads back to the store you might try it.

I totally understand your sickness.

I'm amazed by all those who tries to understand the full nature of the problems and to solve them trying small "tricks" to avoid them. At the same time I'm even more amazed by Apple who so highly ignore their customers. Apples reason for existence if I may say so..

Just think about the amount of hours spent on solving these problems outside Apple's office!

Wonder how all these hours compare to the hours spent inside Apple's offices.. Not speaking about the concentration of knowledge they have in hand. If the amount of hours would compare, it could possibly be questioned if Apple should have told us more about their effort. Just to show their customers some respect I would say.

One thing I have concluded with is that there is no "trick" or "set of tricks" that solves our problems. Thinking of how our iPads used to function before the last updates just makes Apple look really silly.

This is probably not at all one of the first times they have done so, but the first time I think the problems are totally unacceptable. The key functions of the iPad justifies that.

My interest is now in looking at us as a group and how we spend our time. I personally would like to go back to using my iPad as a tool, not as a source to waste my time. I think many, many agrees to that. Too simple??

The big effort users who tries to overcome the problems, could be looked at as a lack of belief that Apple's gonna solve the problems. The higher activity in these kind of discussions, the lower is my belief is that Apple is a product that we should bind to. This applies to me at least.

I wish my fellow users a solution coming up real soon and Apple good luck making it.

I tried switching off all the spotlight services but still had a couple of crashes last night.

One thing I do think might be related is that I type quite fast on the ipad and with speed comes inaccuracy which is often dealt with by the onboard spellchecking capabilities.

I have to wonder if it is the spellcheck service causing these crashes when typing quickly, almost like a race condition that isn;t being captured.

I'm going to turn off auto correction and spellcheck to see if this has any affect.

Hello Everyone,

Just like most of you I have had this issue since IOS 5.1 update. My Ipad 1 seems to be slower to response and crashes Safari and other Apps. I have been to Apple store twice and no result, except a ton of lost info: images, apps. So my advice, stay away from clueless Apple store "geniuses", they know less then people on this site.

All they do is restore original setting and that is a waste of at least two hours from your day. Lets hope Apple fixes this sooner then later...

I posted this and so have other people.

You have to due a DFQ Reset and then set up your ipad as a "NEW IPAD". Give it a different name just to be on the safe side. "DO NOT RESTORE AND RESYNCH YOUR IPAD WITH THE ORIGINAL DATA!!!!"

This will reset all applications, memory allocations and clean all installs. Then do the updates first...

Once this is done, synch your ipad with your computer, as a "NEW IPAD".. DO NOT SYNCH IT WITH YOUR OLD IPAD DATA!!!!!!!!!!

Once this is done, reinstall all your apps.. Make sure that you are reinstalling your purchased apps, and update them to ensure Ios 5.1 compatibility..

Once this is done, then resynch the ipad again, with the new ipad data only..."AGAIN.....DO NOT RESYNCH IT WITH YOUR OLD IPAD DATA, ONLY THE NEW , RENAMED, IPAD">>>>>

This works..... I did it and so did others. If you are not sure how to do this, schedule an appt with apple and make sure that you tell them to show you how to do a DFQ Reset.

Hi George, I'm glad your advice has worked for you. It has not for me. I have twice gone to the genius bar at my local Apple Store where my iPad 1 has been wiped (both software and firmware), restored as a new iPad and I've done a "clean" reinstall. Exactly as you recommend. It doesn't fix a thing. The third time I returned to the Genius Bar, a third genius told me that it was clearly a software issue that Apple has to address and create a fix for. He suggested that I turn my iPad off and back on often and to make sure my iPad was set to issue automatic reports to Apple. He assured me that programmers do look at these reports as he had had direct experience with them doing so when he was in Cuppertino.

As an aside and as further evidence that this is not a ram issue (as was discussed in much earlier posts here) my iPhone 4 has the same reloading of cached pages as my iPad. I hadn't noticed it earlier because I don't regularly read web pages on my iPhone. Recently, I went to a bookmarked website, followed a link on that site, navigated back to the first website and a two day old page was loaded.

This is a buggy iOS. It needs to be fixed by Apple.
