Safari crashes on iPad after ios 5 update

Same problem here. I read in another thread here to switch to private browsing in the settings, and that seemed to help for a while, but this morning it's been as unstable as ever. AOL's Editions App, which pulls a lot of content from the web does the same thing.

Just chiming in on my experience today - only two crashes, but I actually quit Safari at one point and then launched it again since it was starting to "not react" which is a sign on my iPad that trouble is looming.

Try another browser. I use iCabMobile and it works great. 😉

Thanks, but I think we should be able to use Safari. I would expect it to just work.

I appreciate the tip but iCab has crashed on me as well. I had all of this crap sorted put before I installed the new iOS. Browsers were going great - hadn't crashed in a few weeks and now I never know when it's coming.

I hadn't even tried the AOL Editions app until I read KaBoomBOX's post so I thought I'd give it a try. Crashed on me three times in a row, I deleted it, crashed without even loading the first video.

This is getting ridiculous.

Even if we wanted to abandon Safari, based on the symptoms, the issue seems to be with the underlying webkit webview object (this is why you get it in Twitter, etc). If so, it means that pretty much any browser you run on the iPad will have the same problem.

I am NOT suffering crashes (iPad 1, iOS5), but I AM experiencing a different bug. If a page is longer than the screen, Safari often loads only the visible part. I am unable to scroll to read the rest! Sometimes a refresh will cure it, but not always. Seems to happen mainly in landscape mode, and happens about 30% of the time. (Also happening on my iPhone 4 with iOS 5)

Just to make sure this doesn't become only an iPad1 discussion, let me say my iPad2 does the exact same thing. It won't hold Safari. By that I mean, Safari appears to open, but then crashes at any activity. It does this every time and has done it from iOS5 day one. Not before. It's really silly for Apple not to respond since it obviously is a widespread problerm on one of the apps at the heart of the iPad.

Safari crashes several times a day on my wife's original iPad since upgrading to iOS 5. Restarting the iPad, turning off iCloud, closing open apps - nothing has helped.

However on my iPad 2 running iOS 5, Safari is stable.

I hope Apple gets this resolved soon.

Suspecting bookmarks, I used a URL in an email and Safari opened properly It ran fine all day -- until I tried to visit bookmarks/history. That's where the bugs are found.

Resoliution: use Safari but never bookmarks nor history!

I have IPad 1 and it is crashing on Safari, Huffpo ,some games and just about everywhere else. I use it all the time and have for over a year without problems until this latest upgrade! How can I go back?

Remove your email accounts and shutdown the iPad. Then readd your account. This seems to be fixing the safari crash problem. I had memory issues with 3GS after upgrading to ios5 and read that solution in one of the forums.seems to be working so far. No crashes in 3 hrs ..good luck

My company purchased a number of iPad 2's for access to internal corporate web sites for accessing client information and status on customer care tickets (all web based). Safari crashes and goes to home screen every time we try to login to any and all corporate web sites.

This appears to be the exact same JavaScript problem that plagued Safari in Mac OS X Show Leopard and was finally fixed in OS X Lion (well mosty - it's still buggy but at least it's now usable). Under Snow Leopard we just went back to an earler version of Safari. Unfortunately under iOS5, we don't seem to have that option as far as I know.

We've found that if you turn off JavaScript support in Safari under iOS5, it stops crashing but then we loose all context menus and other JavaScript based web page content, making it just as useless. The loss of productivity has management ready to throw iPad 2 out the door and buy something that works.

Is there any way to regress back to iOS4 or take Safari back to an earlier version under iOS5?

I had the same problem. removing the bookmarks sync in both the iPad and the destop did the trick.

Tried the email reinstall. Seemed to help for awhile, but still running low on memory and crashing.
