I had these same problems with my ipad 1. I tried everything I found online including a full restore. This helped some but I still had the crashes. Also turning off icloud had no effect. Finally I did a flash erase then set it up like a new ipad.

First make sure you have all your apps synced up. I first updated all the apps, then synced up with my PC. On the PC I deleted all the free apps, figuring I can reload them, though most were just taking up space. After I synced up the ipad to my PC I did a full erase of the ipad (through the setup menu reset options) and went through the set up process again like it was a new ipad. Then I synced the ipad to the PC to get the apps reloaded. After that I have not had any problems.

There's tons of us who are reporting the same Safari crashes and memory instability after the OS 5.0.1 update. This is affecting many users/owners and all of the known (and posted) "fix its" do NOT resolve the issue, as the problems persist after performing any of the known fix its.

these issues are beyond the Apple Communities as well, if googling:

iPad 2 crashes

iPad 2 OS crashes

iPad 2 safari crashes

iPad 2 crashes after update

iPad 2 OS 5.0.1 crashes

Many will find that there are LOTS of folks who are now having multiple issues after doing the OS upgrade, which has made their iPads unstable when cruising the web, when trying to post/reply/PM text on multiple forums that utilize vBulletin software packages or when trying to open PDF files of a certain size.

Keep posting in that above thread - it's been growing daily. The louder iPad owners get about the issue, hopefully it will get escalated & resolved SOON. Also, do complete the apple feedback online form and post your issues in there as well to notify Apple of the issues.

I sent a letter a couple of days ago to Tim Cook, Apple CEO, with a printout of this discussion group. I front ended it with saying it is "because we care and want to continue to use and recommend apple products that I sending this and that the discussion group exists". He may never personally see it, but someone in his office will.

I previously did a post of recommended fixes that seemed to work for me and said I would get back. The fixes worked for a day or so, and then the problems came back, but not as severe. But they are there enough to frustrate and take some of the enjoyment out of using the iPad. Apple has sent beta's of the new release of iOS to developers. So hopefully, it's just a matter of time and hanging in there. I don't want to solve my problems by having to buy an iPad 3 in March (or whenever). My iPad 1 should work, if not with iOS 5, then they should make available the older, more stable version based on model type.

I know this thread is about the iPad but what happened to me might be enlightening to some.

I have an iPhone 4 running 4.3.1 that was very stable. I updated to 5.0.1 and immediately started having issues. I could open any app and within 2 minutes it would crash. I did a complete restore from backup. Still had the issue. Did this 5 times and still had issues. I tried it all and nothing was working. I tried resetting stats, I tried downloading a new app from the app store. Nothing worked.

I have 113 apps and installing them all one at a time was not an option I looked forward to.

Finally out of total desperation I removed my Exchange account from mail. Then I relinked it.

This fixed my problem. It seems the mail app was spinning out of control on my Exchange account and causing things to crash quickly. I've had the AP News app running for an hour now and music playing in the background and no crash yet. If I hadn't resolved this today I would have bought a new Droid phone. I really didn't want to have to do that but I need a phone that works reliably.

I hope this helps someone else.

I posted before that I was having all the same crash issues on Safari, iTunes, forum posting, etc. I also have an iPad 1. Somehow I resolved most of the issues, although I'm not sure exactly which step worked. I saw a post elsewhere about the io5 update somehow not releasing RAM correctly. Folks that have SystemLite and other apps that moniter RAM described apps that crashed still hogging memory causing repeated crashes due to low resources.

I did not restore my iPad. I did reset it using the home and power buttons (several times actually), after closing all the apps running.

I remember fixing the seach issues on iTunes by changing the search string. As soon as I changed the string I was looking for, I was able to complete a search. Then I did the reset.

I try to avoid crashes on Safari and iTunes by closing them myself as soon as I see that a particular page is too slow. I am able to post to forums and do searches and my iPad is stable again. However, my experience has made me afraid of having iTunes, Shazam, Safari and Email all open at the same time, for fear that I will recreate the horrible crashing. I haven't had a problem with Safari and email, but I don't open iTunes for searches while Safari is up. I still have a little of lag with the keyboard.. Maybe this will help someone else and avoid the restore pain.

Obviously Apple needs to fix this ASAP.

I have posted my problems here and have been followingthe thingspeople are doing to try and fix the problem.

I bought an ipad as i wanted a pc loke tool which was simple and reliable to use, to basic computing stuff.

I got sick of the hassles with having to maitanin a pc and netbook.

I dont want to have to stand on my left leg and sing the national anthem to get this thing to work as advertised and sold.

I am not an apple fan but have started to use their products ipad, ipd and mac and i do believe they are a bit over rated but they are still good products and have a lot to offer over my window pcs, if they worked properly.

This issue where the company does not appear to even acknowlege there is a problem is souring my taste a bit for these products. I will persierveer mainly because i have so much money invested and i do like my ipad for other things that seem to work. However the are plenty of other devices on the market now, ie tablets, which are becoming more than viable alternatives.

I would be happy if they just admitted there was a problem and gave some indicAtion they would fix it.

How long ago did you do this? I followed your lead, did the full erase, set up my ipad1 as a new device, and thought everything was peachy for about 3 days, then the crashing started up again, both Safari and apps. The only things I have found consistently to work are 1) shut down all multitasking before I open Safari; 2) no more than one tab open in Safari at any time; 3) clear Safari history daily. To keep more demanding apps from crashing, again, close down all multitasking. So to me it seems that multitasking is either taking up too much memory, and/or multitasking isn't shutting down apps after the usual time (isn't there a specific amount of time those apps are actually running in the background? As I recall that was an issue when multitasking was first introduced). Altogether it looks to me that 5.0.1 is taking up so much memory that any type of multitasking, in Safari or with other apps, is not functional on an iPad 1. Hope this is fixed soon, I, too, have been a loyal Apple customer for years and am fast becoming disillusioned. I think the complete silence from Apple is the most disturbing part of this whole mess. It seems like Apple lost it's mind when Jobs died. And yes, I have sent emails to Apple and all my crashes are being reported.

Interesting... a post delivered to my e-mail detailing Marty's interaction with Tim Cook's team and one mentioning it were deleted. I can only guess why Apple decided to delete them..

No matter how much they say they are working on it, there's this issue of iMac's screens developing gray spots, and Apple's answer is "work in a clean environment". My other monitors are fine. Anyway, I'll believe Apple when they do something. Prognosis pretty poor these days.
