Well, there are websites (in the US anyway) that buy used IPads in working and or non working conditions.
I also could not try to pass of a unreliable unit stating it was o.k.
Besides not really having the bucks now for another IPad type device, I think I might wait to see what Apple says or does.
Just an add on to anyone following this blog, the 3rd used I got from the Apple store has been crash free for a week. I would still love to hear some response from Apple saying the know there is a problem and that they are working on it !!
The things I find amazing about all of this is that, for example, my ipad has been broken since November. Why would I ever consider giving them more money for an ipad 3 now? I have to say this mentality is getting a bit long in the tooth. There are so many competitors now I can do everything I need with any of about 10 devices out there.
Even more disturbing is if you mention the problem on other we,bsites the paid shills actually come out and discredit you with things like " our whole family has ipads and all updated with zero problems". I have to admit, this is a very successful means of suppressing the bad press. This post will also be deleted as it is Apple critical. Next version of the Asus Transformer Prime will be getting my money.
Every manufacturer has duff units but Apple just has less than most and has the happiest customers and highest reliability rates over its competitors. If you don't want an iPad 3 then don't get one, simple.
The chances of getting another faulty unit in minimal.
Just because a few people have problems doesn't mean there is a conspiracy and people are paid to say that everything is ok, you're just a over sensitive nut job with a victim mentality. I bet you were happy with it until it broke.
It's no skin off our noses if you want to degrade your experience by buying an "also ran" tablet.
At least that way you'd have a wider range of things to moan about like performance, lack of apps, no updates at all, terrible resale and the discounts offered a couple of months after you bought it.
For me the reason to have it is to...
Read books. Bound paper accomplishes the same thing so I would expect that to work
Surf the Internet. Works most of the time but crashes a lot on certain websites and web video does not display properly half of the time.
Draft documents. Works but a bit impractical because of the new typing lag
Facebook. App is terrible doesn't work properly
Preview and import pictures taken with my Sony alpha. This works I can use my camera connection kit
Print imported pictures. Doesn't work anymore using my AirPrint printer just hangs, use to work great
Dlna controller. Same again use to work great and now produces very mixed results
Edit photos before uploading to Facebook. Low memory errors and crashes have put a stop to this.
Order pizza This works fine
I sell apple products along with competing products so I have a lot of experience. My boss has an iPad he doesn't use it anymore because in his words "it crashes all the time".
With such a small portfolio of products each one has to shine. I don't think they do anymore and they are no better than any competing product. My friends bought Motorola xooms when they fell in price and they love them. They say positive things that I would never relate to my iPad.
It doesn't mean I don't like my iPad because I do, I would pay money to get ios 4.3.5 back on so I can use it for all the things I intended to use it for. Three months without a peep from apple is not the way to convince me to buy more apple products
If I see the keynote in march and they dont mention any bug fixes and use the phrase "it just works" it'll convince me to avoid them for good.
After doing full restore 3 weeks ago, the crashes are starting to happen again....I was hopeful since after doing the restore it was nice to have a device that worked as it should, but 2 days ago the problem showed up again. I have not changed or added anything so I really can't why it came back other than a bug in the OS.
I finally found a browser that doesn't crash - Opera Mini. However, that's all that's working properly. Between the crashes, memory problems and short battery recharge life, I'm ready to jump ship. My iMac is working like crap as well. All that's missing is dog food.
If you want to sell your iPad, try www.gazelle.com. They pay you a decent price for iphones and ipads.
I never thought I would ever say "I wish I'd stayed with Microsoft."
Yeah, I know what you mean. If Apple would only say, Hey We have a problem and a fix is on the way. All might be forgiven. They've done so much good that, nobody is perfect. Just own it and fix it. My iPad 2 is dodgy, my friend who got one on my advise asks why it crashes every time he looks at it? It hurts. I have 50 million more apps than he does, yet his crashes as much or more than mine. Making him jump through hoops is a waste. iOS needs to be fixed. Any hardware fix is temporary at best. March 7th??? Why not push the upgrade right now? I'm assuming by now they fixed it. Bad assumption? Rollback!!!
OSX Daily posted fixes for this. I found them on this thread. I only do the first three steps and it helps for about 2 or 3 weeks, then i do it again. Not a great or permanent solution, but good enough to get me by till 5.1 is released, then i will reassess. http://osxdaily.com/tag/ios-5/
You mean like when they admitted to the antenna issues with the iPhone by saying "you're holding it wrong"? Maybe we're holding our iPads wrong, causing them to crash 😉

Nice One
A bit of humor is needed here and there.
It is not just how to hold it, but where to stick it 😮
I suspect there are a few issues:
1> iOS 5 introduced some bugs, and or new memory sucking features.
2> There has been a huge swelling on the web of sites using HTML5/CSS practices that are very heavy on JavaScript further burdening devices with limited RAM.
3> iOS 5 included a much improved JavaScript engine for Apps, but did NOT upgrade the JavaScript engine used for the browser.
Even if Apple fixes iOS , I suspect the web may outgrow the 256MB of RAM on the iPad 1... and occasionally push the 512MB of the ipad 2.
IMHO - It may be best to sell my iPad 1 before the March 7th event so it is only one generation old... and not 2 generations old.
ROTFLOL!!
update:
Well I asked my wife recently when her ipad started having issues. It wasn't when ios 5 came out. It was after they started the icloud stuff. (which was fairly recently)
Yes, I've turned off all the icloud options. Yes it still crashes over and over again.
I just need to figure out how to downgrade to the ios with no icloud or back to ios 4.x.
Don't get your hopes up that 5.1 will resolve an iPad crash issues. Instead, Apple is focusing on camera sliders and expanded Siri functionality.
Boo...#FAIL
